Soldiers are made for war, right? Soldiers as early as history is trained for battle. Not all of those battles really made sense but then soldiers are always there to follow the king---because they are soldiers. If people don't want soldiers to die then why do we have to create an army?

You are all missing my point. Or perhaps it wasn't clear enough. The question here is not about GRIEVING. Of course we naturally grieve and certainly we pay respect to the soldiers who died for our cause. The gist of my question is---to rephrase it---by complaining about death of soldiers sent to war, it makes it appear that soldiers should not be sent to war because they die. My uncle is a retired Lt. Colonel and he agrees with me but it seems like my understanding is too vague for anybody to see.

Ok, going out on a limb here.

I understand what you are saying. Joining the military.. you are joining the war, you are preparing and waiting for a deployment while working a job, because your job is to your country and defending it. And death and war go hand-in-hand. Now death sucks and when my hubby deploys I know I'll be upset beyond words... but I know he'll be okay. It's just us civilians... we can't wrap our minds around risking our lives for our country, standing a risk of dying. We need an Army to protect our country.. this is after all, the land of the free and the home of the brave!

I understand what you are saying (although you could have said it in a more tactful manner). All soldiers today are volunteers. They may not get it (the fact that they may be called on to give their life, or take one in service to their country) when they sign the papers, but it hits them when they get to boot camp. I grieve for the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who die for our country, because I serve, and they are all my brothers and sisters in arms. But I know that, for the most part, they would prefer that their sacrifice be given in the cause of a just war, and a win for the U.S. Whether you agree with the first part is pointless to debate here and now. We are already in this war, the goal now should be to win it. That, more than any tombstone or veteran's day parade, is the only memorial worth a damn to these heroes.

Because we love them, Because they made a choice, Because they have family that grieves for them whether they agree with their choice or not.
All nations need a Military force. Can you imagine football without an opposing team? Can you sit by and just let anyone rule your world and make you do horrible things? Do you want to be led by a crackpot?

Now I get what you mean. I think your phrasing was a bit off.
And I think you need to break it down into a few questions actually.
Why do people create an Army. Because people want your land and want power.
We are proud of those that want to stand up for our freedoms and our way of life. We grieve when those rights are gone.
If everyone wanted that way of life then no we wouldn't need an army.
Unfortunately you have people that think your way of life is stupid and their's is better and they make you fight.
Of course we know that people are going to get killed. WE are connected to those people. Realistically we understand they can get killed, and you are proud of them. But you still love them. It's not whining it's love. People vent in different ways.

Wow. I don't even know what to say to this.

Read my blog and come back to talk to me:

I don't really cover your question in there, but maybe you'll understand the war a bit more. Who the enemy is, why we're fighting and what happens if we lose.

Perhaps you'll gain some respect for the men and women who protect you.

What do you think of a man who leaves a nice house with AC, big screen TV and all the amenities, that leaves his wife and kids to go halfway around the world, live in a tent, patrolling the desert in 130 degrees heat, 30 lbs (and another 10 degrees) of body armor, carrying 30lbs of ammo and 5 lbs of weapon, for the sole purpose of defending the Constitution of this fine country, it's people and their way of life. To protect you and your AC house with a big flat screen TV and the latest playstation. This man risks his life, lives in miserable conditions and witnesses things unimaginable to most civilians so that YOU will never have to.

If he is lost, you should give him and his family every honor you can muster.

If he is not, you should demonstrate your gratitude and still give him his due honor.

****I'll agree with your uncle, I think. I despise those who trample the graves of my fallen brothers for their political agendas.**** You may be correct in saying you poorly portrayed that sentiment in your original post.

We have an Army as a deterrent, not to go around attacking nations at whim!

Dieing defending your country, and dieing for oil are 2 different issues. No one in the services signed up to die so Exxon could pull their 2 Million barrels a month of oil out of Iraq!

If you don't know the difference, I suggest a class in morals!

As an ex soldier, and combat veteran of Vietnam, I find your comment offensive! To think someone can even think that is reprehensible that they put so little value on a human life!

Go pull a tour in Iraq, and then tell me what you think!

We create an army to protect ourselves! We mourn for any man killed in the service of this country. Without them, we would have been taken over by others long before now. Yes, they train for war; each hopes he will never have to use his knowledge to kill others, because they want to live, they soon learn there is only one way to do this, kill or be killed. They serve because they love their country, don't you?

Well, I kinda get what your saying, but it also sounds ignorant. If you were a soldier and had a wife and kids, who like to not even be a thought from your family? What I am sick of is when people get bombed and lived, and then they are instantly thought of as a hero, like that one chick who got ambushed. She didn't do **** but get jacked up by some muslim. Youd think she was Christ.

Well it ought to trouble us all...these are the folks that stand between us and those who would take our homes, our freedoms, and our lives.

The loss of a single one of them is a tragedy...compounded by those such as yourself who fail to understand the depth of their sacrifice.

Because they are human beings. they are someones loved one. That's why they should whine, because their lives have meaning. They are risking their lives for a pointless war.
