I am trying to get a second part-time job but seems like everytime I fill out applications and I fill them out the correct way and also give my resume, I never get any responses back from the employers, I think its because of my age I'm 48 and all they would hire now is the young people, I thought age was a discrimination, I filled out applications for like dunkin donuts several times and retail stores and for foodservice positions, right now I'm an assistant manager where I work at but its not an everyday job its mostly a weekend job like fri, sat, and sundays, every once in a while we may work for a whole week and then we may have sometime 1 or 2 weeks off until something else comes up, the young people gets hired before me. can someone plz give me a good answer? Thanking you in advance

Perhaps it is your limited availability that scares off potential employers? If you are not available to work weekends or sometimes not available for odd weeks at a time, they will need to cover your shifts and they likely prefer someone with a clear schedule, not one that needs to be worked around. There are employers that prefer/hire mature workers, I know a bigbox store that hires seniors as 'greeters' so just keep looking and I am sure you'll find something.

Age discrimination is definitely alive and well in this beautiful land of ours.

Dont apply at places that have primarily 20somethings working there....and the bigger the better, as far as employers go. The little places...like dunkin donuts maybe have one position to fill and 20 or 30 applicants. The big chain stores, however have 5 or 6 positions to fill and 20 or 30 applicants....odds are better.

Good Luck and Keep trying, you'll find something!

If it has been more than a week after handing in your application call all the places you handed them to to ask why you didnt get an interview, i do this sometimes as it also gives you pointers on what to do better.
Like my first application form i handed in i didn't get the job so i called and they simply asked why they said i hadn't got enough experience for them.. So maybe i was setting my standards a little too high. so i applied to similar stores but lower down.

try Target or Wal*Mart, I always see people of all ages working there. I'm sure you'd be happier there than at Dunkin Donuts anyway. and always call them if they don't call you within a few days.
