I took my dog biking yesterday night like I always do. I went to a big parking lot because I wanted to let her off leash. Some how she has ripped (scraped) her back paws. She's not limbing but she is licking them alot. I have cleaned them up. I will bring her to the vet tomorrow but is this a big problem? Will they heal on thre own? I never had this happen before.

She will definately get better. If I were you, I'd soak them for a bit in cold water, maybe also clean them with Witch Hazel, a gentle cleanser that's like rubbing alcohol although without the nasty sting and is for that type of use. Also, if you can, wrap them in a bit of gauze. Taking her to the vet is a must, and they will possibly perscribe an oinment/disinfectant or antibiotic. They will heal, though. My cat has done that before, too.

It's certainly right that no one should have a dog if they aren't prepared to take care of emergencies -- but that doesn't help you, or the dog, right now. Cleaning and rinsing the wounds are the first step, and then getting the pads back in place. Do NOT use Crazy Glue in this case since you want to let the wounds drain. Once they are clean and as dry as possible, pack a good amount of Triple Antibiotic Ointment (from any drug store) into the wounds, wrap gauze around them, and tape it, with a lot of gauze on the bottom to "cushion" the pad to reduce the pain as he moves around. Almost certainly the dog will try to chew off the bandage, so this isn't going to be easy. Ask around your neighborhood to see if someone has one of those plastic collars that keep dogs from chewing at their paws -- or sometimes a pet shop will have them (they're cheap). There is something MUCH better than the Triple Antibiotic Ointment from the drug store. It's called Corona Ointment, and you don't need a prescription for it, but it's usually only sold in larger pet shops or places that deal with horse or cattle owners. It's great stuff, if you can find it. The down side to all this is that you shouldn't be using the Triple Antibiotic or Corona oinement for long period of time since it will keep the pad soft & keep it from healing properly. Usually you just use it for a few days and then the antibiotic pills from the vet will take care of any infections. If one of your friends has a nurse in the family, you may be able to get some very helpful advice from them. It's certainly worth asking around. Protecting the bandaging from moisture and dirt with the baggie or plastic wrap, as someone else mentioned, is a good idea. Moisture is a bad thing to let in there. If the poor dog can at least walk a bit to go outside & pee, etc., you can tape some small socks over his feet to keep dirt out of the bandage, if it's not wet outside. Re-do the ointment and bandaging every day and hope the drainage doesn't get smelly with a lot of pus. This dog truly does need to see a vet and get the paws stitched, and get some real antibiotics, but if your parents won't do it ... it puts you in a tough spot. This didn't happen just from a dog walking around on the street (which he obviously shouldn't be doing anyway). I've been breeding and rescuing dogs for almost 50 years and I've never seen one with three ripped pads. You need to make sure this can NEVER happen again, or you need to find a new home for this dog. Dogs are a serious responsibility, like kids -- and if you're not prepared to take care of them you should not have them. I understand it's not your fault -- but you need to have a serious conversation with your parents, if they're not completely unreasonable. This is a VERY serious condition the dog is in, and unless you're VERY lucky, without proper treatment (and real antibiotics from the vet), this dog could die a very long and painful death, or be crippled and in pain for the rest of his life. I wish you luck in this, especially for the poor dog's sake.

Get her to the vet so she can be checked for infection or glass stuck in the wounds.
Anything you apply to the pads to promote healing she'll lick off.
I'd start looking into buying some boots for her. They're expensive but worth it.
.Since she's running with you I'd suggest you find her a set of leather ones that lace up the front to protect her feet. Then get a set of the cloth ones to have on hand for injuries or during very wet weather. For now I'd slip baby socks on her after applying triple antibiotic cream to the pads whenever she's at rest.Like when she's napping next to you while you watch T.V.
If they annoy her you'll be right there to make her leave them be.If she gets up they'll slide off but at least some of the creams absorbed in where it'll do some good and the rest is on the sock rather than your carpets.
In the future I hope you'll use a little more caution in where you let her run.Remember she's barefoot.

I have a border collie who ripped her footpad not once but twice while jumping at the tree which overhangs our privacy fence. I took her to the vet and they put antibiotic gel on her foot and wrapped it with gauze pads and an ace bandage and she was good as new in a couple weeks. They can take a little while to heal so just be sure your dog doesn't jump on the foot or get it wet. If it is deep they may do stitches which was the case on one of the jumping occassions.Good luck and I am sure it will be good as new soon.

As long as shes brought to a vet, shes fine! My dog had that happened once, and what happened was they just applied a gel and that acted as a neosporin would. For the licking, mabye they will give you a cone for her to wear just for a night or two, and it should be healed in less than a week.

Yes, they will heal on their own. Good idea to keep your vet appointment so he/she can check for any infection. Have you checked to see if there's anything stuck in there? Like glass or a pebble, etc.? Let her lick it, it will help with the healing process.

If they are scrapes, he will heal them with his licking. If they are deeper, you may have to take him to the vets. He might get an infection, and need antibiotics.

she does need to go to the vets.
In most cases they do heal and shold be fine there is of course a chance something can happen.
She probably won't be able to go running for a while.
Good Luck but seh should be fine
