when their son/daughter is on a mission, with the new living arrangements and all?
It seems to me that would be a big cost savings for the church and they would be able to reduce the monthly amount.
It could easily be covered by tithing money.

I know that when my brothers were on a mission, my parents were paying $500 a month. All families with a missionary in the mission field payed the same, regardless of where they went.

I guess they've changed things in the last 10 years.

If what "love yahoo" says is true, then the women's initial payment must be lower?

The thing that sucks is that even if they pay $500 a month, the Missionary never sees that, and they have to live in complete poverty.

I've never heard of that at all, What I know is that when missionaries go on a mission they pay their $10,000 in one payment I believe that at the same time that they turn in their papers to the church offices in SLC, Utah. The family only pays its tithing normally after that, if they only winn $400.00 a month, they'll pay their $40.00 tithing and that's it! .. and they pay it if they want. The money that the missionaries to be pay is for their living expenses... well, some other things like snacks and other things they cover it by themselves later but those are not great expenses.

And I don't think that families are required to pay those $500.00 because not everyone can really afford to pay $500.00 for something else but like a rent, not all missionaries are rich kids.

*Hmm... woman pay the same than guys I stongly believe, but since they only last a year and a half, not two entire years like guys do, it wouldn't surprise me at all that woman pay less money to go on a mission. I'll ask the missionaries, I'm interested to know about that.

The cost of paying for a missionary varies. It is determined by where they are serving. It is also possible to donate money to the missionary fund when paying tithing or fast offerings.
Ex: If a missionary serves in France the livings costs are much higher than a missionary who serves in the Dominican Republic.
Tithing goes to other things:
Temple and Church construction
Church Welfare program
The list is endless!

Such a concept is news to me. I believe that only the tithing is sufficient. All else is borne by the parents for a son or daughter on a mission.
