Believe me, these free programs are great and do an excellent job at no cost to you. Most likely software that you are required to buy will often end up hogging a lot of your system processes.

These are a few FREE programs (which I personally use), which work great together to check whether your computer is infected, if anything is found they will remove the problem files. Make sure to disable your own Anti-virus before installing a new one because it may cause a conflict.

Download the following:
Spybot: Search & Destroy - Application to scan for spyware, adware, hijackers and other malicious software. Make sure to download all of the newest updates before scanning.

Windows Defender - Windows Defender is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. Make sure to download all of the newest updates before scanning.

A Free online Scan you can perform is at Trend Micro’s website. They have an online scanner that works through your internet browser to detect viruses and malware on your computer. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

AVG Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware Free Edition -http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/
Make sure to disable your own Anti-virus before installing a new one because it may cause a conflict. Make sure to download all of the newest updates before scanning.

To prevent future problems download SpywareBlaster and PC Tools Firewall Plus. Update them both and make sure to enable all protection.

What Free anti-virus apps have you tried ??? You must have tried all the bad ones. There are 2 Free antivirus that are very good : Avira Antivir PE or AOL ActiveShield. As far as paid anti-virus i would recommend either Kaspersky or Bit Defender. If you want the Full security Suite which includes Antivirus, Firewall and AntiSpyware there's no better suite than the ZoneAlarm Security Suite : It has the Kaspersky anti-virus engine, Excellent ZoneAlarm Pro firewall and Zonelab's own Antispyware app. Don't use Norton, it uses way too much resources and it doesn't play nice with a lot of programs.

You should say what freeware have you tried, as paid programs the best choices are Macfee enterprise and avg professional. I recommend you to try what someone said before (I THINK THATS THE BEST ANSWER BY THE WAY) try spybot S&D with ad-aware 2007 and avg free edition. Those are the software that i have being using from a long time and my computers run smoothly, i even uninstall the norton suit on my new laptop to stay with those 3. You can have 2 spywares running at the same time without any problems and only 1 antivirus.

Kaspersky Anti Virus is the best I've ever used. They all offer free trials, but I stick with Kaspersky. It won't bloat your system like Norton and you have 100's of options to choose for a flawless setup from start to finish, plus customer support is very helpful and located in the US if you care about that stuff.

I've used some others that worked just as good, but the interface for them were hard to navigate for the average user.

I always recommend Kaspersky I use the Server edition on the servers I work with too.

This question is answered 10 times a day. You could have saved some points if you looked at previous questions.

AVG is free, but you can pay for it if you want to.
