In the greater sense, it applies to all relationships, particularly familial. Surprisingly, in this day and age of enlightenment, when the emotional abuse of children is so much more understood as a taboo and destructive, not enough real preachers teach about how much parents need to honor their children.
I am currently counseling a woman, daughter of a deacon in the So. Baptist Convention, who hates women so much that he caused three of his four wives to commit suicide, and his daughter was way too close for comfort. Now, his defense that keeps her coming back is this commandment, taken at "fundamentalistic" face value. This is the inherent danger to fundamentalism.

When you have children of your own, you would hope they would follow your council, since you are an experience adult. Honoring them doesn't mean kissing a ss even if they're wrong. We honor in many other ways than just common respect. We take care of them when they get older. We respect them for taking care of us and giving us opportunities. No parent tries to lead their children astray. So how does this "prey" on children? I've haven't ever seen someone try to take the 10 commandments and make them a bad thing.

By honoring our mother and father does not mean only to honor them while you are a child.
Honor them by being a good son or daughter, not being disrespectful, but shame free and honorable. If a child grows up and is an honest, trustworthy , and caring and a loving human being. That child honors the mother and father in society.
Cain did not honor thy mother and thy father.
When Jesus was baptized in the Jordon, the heavens opened. A voice from God said behold my son whom I am well pleased.

Since when is admonishing anyone to honor their parents "preying" on them? Adults as well as children need to be reminded that they parents are to be honored. If not, then why have Mothers Day or Fathers Day? Children of all ages can benefit from a little humble respect for their elders.

The 5th commandment is not just targeted toward children. Everybody that is born has a mother and a father and age does not matter, the commandment applies to everyone.

God was wise to use the word, "Honor" instead of "obey".
When we are young children, "Honor" means to "obey".
When our children grow up, "Honor" no longer means to "obey" like it used to, but it still tells children to Honor and repect and listen to the advice of their parents.
Right now I'm in my 50's and my children are in their 20's. We have a different relationship then we had 15 years ago.
Four years ago, I was taking care of an elderly mother and then I needed to "Honor" her by taking care of her, even when she was being unreasonable.
I hope I never become as unreasonable with my children when I'm in my 80's as my mother was with me.

Christianity does not "prey on children" human beings prey on children. The 5th commandment is directly targeted to all of us. Not just children. Teaching us early on to respect authority.

Targeting has nothing to do with the commandment! It means just what it says; "Honour thy Father and thy Mother that thou days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee." Obey your father and mother, or you days will be shorter on this earth!

OOOOO There you are Desiree!!!! Trying to rack up another one, I see!
Until my parents are deceased, I will remain their child and they my parents. To "honor" them is to "mind" them, and my father always told us, "When you think you're too old to be spanked, you just let me know!" No one ever took him up on his challenge! And just last year, when I said a "curse" word in front of my mother, she gave me a reminder "slap" on the head to show her displeasure.
Sooooooooooo... I do not know a time in my life when my parents were not to be "honored," even after death, we are to honor them, to remember them with honor and not "dishonor" them.
C'mon, now Desiree... Christianity PREYING on children? If anything, Christianity "preys" upon SINNERS... and we are ALL sinners, my dear!
PS... how does it feel to be part of the minority 10% of the world's population that does not believe in God, or a god?

Do you honor people who act despicable? The commandment makes the same exception with the use of the word "honor"
