Well, I really don't see how this can be seen as control. How does this control me or anyone else? If I make wrongful use of the name of thy God, what happens? Am I somehow going to be punished or sent to jail? Control means that if we do not comply with a command, then we will be punished. We don't have to respect the name of God or Keep the Sabbath Day Holy. It's a simple choice that people make. Nothing happens either way. I believe in the rights of everyone to believe what they may, no matter if I agree with them or not.

Unlike inmates in prison, people can choose to follow the ten commandments or not. In prison, you do as you are told or you are put in solitary confinement.
Last time I worked on Sunday, I came home and had dinner and went back to work on Monday without any problems.
You can assume it's all about control, but I'm free to act for myself no matter what.

The entirety of the ten commandments are to keep control. Moses was not stupid. He was raised as the son of a Pharaoh. He was taught the secrets of an ancient civilization. He knew the secrets of Thoth, or as much of them that survived at that time. He knew that to survive in the wilderness he would have to unite the people under one banner. He built the ark, which was nothing more than a giant capacitor.

My pastor is currently doing a series on the 10 commandments...he covered #4 two weeks ago and #3 the week before. ...and I agree with his take on the subject.
The ten commandments weren't given to us to keep us in line or deceive us in to believing something that isn't true. The ten commandments are lifeguards (lifeguards is an anagram that helps us remember the ten commandments)...God told us these things to protect us from harm and help us to live a happy life.
Re: the third commandment, it is so much more than cursing...and it is a commonly broken commandment. How many times have you heard someone use the name of God to manipulate someone. The TV preacher who tells his viewers that God wants them to send him money and even the parent that says "God will punish you for that" to control a child's behavior. Both of these are wrongful use of God's name!
Casual (as an exclamation point for example) and manipulative (see above) use of his name diminishes him in OUR minds...and this causes us to dismiss other teachings. Furthermore, it can cause others to stumble and we are responsible. How many people have turned away from God or choosen not to believe in him because of so-called believers that condemmed them to hell in his name!
The 3rd commandment tells us to be careful when we speak his name!
Re: the fourth, this one is common sense...but it is common sense that far too many people ignore in this day (and in the past...but it's really bad now!). The first part you quoted is vague...what does it mean to "keep it holy"?...you have to look at the ENTIRE commandment to see the logic and to see why it is to HELP us not to control us! The rest of the commandment reads, "Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord you God."...after making it clear that it applies to everyone from the master of the house to servants, animals and strangers it goes on to say, "For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day."
My pastor paraphrased the fourth commandment as "enjoy a rest" (the "e" in "lifeguards"). Rest is a basic requirement...if God rested after his work, he clearly understood about the value of rest...and since he created us, he knew that we needed to rest and step away from our normal daily routine of work.
But how many people do you know that work seven days a week, how many never take a vacation, how many drive themselves into the ground and miss out on all the good things in life because they forget to "stop and smell the roses"!!! God's creation is beautiful and he wants us to enjoy life to the fullest...people that take the time to rest and focus on family and God for one day a week are generally happier AND more able to deal with the everyday stresses (and the bigger ones) that happen on the other six days!
BTW, if you want to hear the sermons on the first and second commandments, they are available online at http://www.reallifeconnect.org/mediaportal/...click the link for "view our videos". These two are really good if you want to hear a practical rather than punitive rationale for the first two commandments!...the third and fourth should be online soon.

Both. They grow up Christian, and have a strong belief in what they are taught to belive. When they grow up, they are still projecting this image of 'purity', and are scared that if they research there own religion, they will not belive it anymore. That's why I'm a Buddhist, though I still respect Christians and ask that they respect me.
