It doesn't. That is child abuse... and child abuse never puts the child "in line". A child will not "obey" a parent they don't respect, and kids don't respect parents that hit them.
If they are crying for attention, they are likely being neglected. Also child abuse.

If your child NEEDS something, it is your duty as a parent to give it to them. Want and need are different things.

Some people do this I'm sure but I don't so I'm not sure what you mean by how does that work? How does what work? Smacking someone? Well then you raise your hand and come down hard hitting someone.

If they need attention it should be positive attention.

I don't think that's a good idea, something else you need to know is what age is the child, in a certain age it's normal that the child cry just to get the parents attention, but at other ages that's not normal. At either case you have to understand your child, and find out how to convince him or her that you love them, and you need to do other tasks to make their lives easier. Everything with love and respect.

when my kids pull this kind of fit I simply stop and look at them not saying a word until they settle down then I calmly ask them what they need. Sometimes not saying anything at all goes alot further than anything else.

smacking them gives them negative attention, it would be better to give them positive attention

Not very effectively. This is NOT a situation where spanking is warranted. I know plenty of reasons to spank, this is NOT one of them.
