Korea was really a stalemate.
If the VC had lost, yes, it's possible that Vietnam would have developed like the Republic of Korea did. If there'd been a stalemate yes, you might have a Communist Vietnam much like the DPRK, as well.
But it's more than choosing capitalism that creates a developed economy, and it would have been up to the Vietnamese people to make the right choices. The success of the RoK is not exactly unprecedented, but it's close. They made a conscious decision to follow the Japanese model, and succeeded by dint of tremendous effort and sacrifice.

To John B, North Vietnam and South Vietnam are not currently at war because North Vietnam won and conquered South Vietnam.
I'm not sure N. Vietnam would have been a large of a basket case as N. Korea. While evil, they have made adaptations to economic reality, do not demonize the outside world, have not deified any one person in a cult of personality, and they did overthrow the even more murderous Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. I think N. Vietnam would likely be much as Vietnam is today. Not free, but not a living hell and a nation of concentration camps like N. Korea is.

Vietnam is already becoming like South Korea. Outsourced textile industry is booming there. Next up is the Electronics EMS industry which is poised to make Vietnam a big part of the contract electronics workplace.
We have to remember that Ho-Chi-Minh was a Nationalist in as much as he was a Communist. Vietnamese goods are already for sale in Wal-Marts all across this great land. Is there a bigger barometer for success than that???

in basic terms like the British gained the yankee revolution, yet lost the peace... No, the yankee's lost the conflict. the component of struggling with a conflict of attrition is to make the different guy stop. They have been efficient. we could have stayed yet another year, yet another 5 years and the end result would have been the comparable. We had no way of winning the hearts and minds. In Iraq, we are much less feared now than the different area. The ShiItes hate us decrease than the sunnies (who hate us much less that the ShiItes). As I see it, our greatest situation would be getting out on the superb time. If we live too long, the two facets will see us as an occupying military, and we can be hated via all (and attacked via all). If we pass away too quickly, what has been prepare will come aside. for my section, I believe Obama extra in this as a results of fact he plans to pass away, and as we are leaving, we can adjust our plans to stay longer or pass away faster as a results of fact the placement warrents (constructive, he SAYS sixteen months, yet whilst the placement warrents, it must be 18 months or maybe 80). McCain plans on our staying there perminantly. He sees us as being a peacekeeping rigidity status between the non violent factions. i don't see that working long term. i think of they'll the two choose us out, at last, and could hotel to violence to tutor their factors.

Exactly Tiger, because the Viet Nam war was patterned by politicians after the Korean war.
