Let's say you were selected by the Yahoo Yamster or other Yahoo authority to write an introduction of what REALLY goes on in here...what would you tell them in the introduction?

2007-07-13 12:47:45 · 16 answers · asked by Searcher 7 in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

I really think that it would be unfair for me to decide which is the best answer, since this is about all of us...

So, voters, would you decide which introduction would best explain to a newbie what our ragtag forum is all about?

You all rock on your answers, some of these are really, really clever!!! I just knew that there are some really creative muses in our group.

I'm going to close the contributions Saturday, 7/14/07 around midnight. Please come back to vote on the best answer on Sunday or Monday.

an ongoing fierce battle between truth and lies... proof and belief... stupidity and a actual smart answer.

R&S is for seekers of Truth. It is the domain of fools, fanatics, and the clever. We are open-minded, close-minded and empty-minded. Deciding who is who is the challenge.

"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."
— Bertrand Russell

We are a community of the faithful and the infidels, seekers of proof and believers in faith; traditionalists and Free Thinkers. Believers and thinkers. The skeptical and the accepting. Worshipers of God and worshipers of humanity. The insecure and the secure. The tolerant and the intolerant. We are defined by our extremes.

"You can get into a habit of thought in which you enjoy making fun of all those other people who don't see things as clearly as you do. We have to guard carefully against it."
— Carl Sagan, (1987)

A danger sign of the lapse from true skepticism in to dogmatism is an inability to respect those who disagree
— Dr. Leonard George

The truth cannot be asserted without denouncing [respectfully] the falsehood.
— Leslie Stephen

The human mind treats a new idea the way the body treats a strange protein. It rejects it.
— P.B. Medawar

ohmygosh you got several INTELLIGENT answers, awesome. Have a star AGAIN---you're doing well today, my friend. did you eat your Wheaties?

deleriumbliss, david, father k y'all ROCK. so, too, do hawaiianbrian and thatchu5.

My answer, which may be the fourth-best so far, is that R&S is a forum where people debate and explore their spirituality, or lack thereof. fundamentalist Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, mainstream Christians, agnostics, atheists, and even the occasional seeker, (or whatever she's calling herself today) participate in a lively debate, attended by people of various social classes, professions, and Intelligence Quotients. The atheists seem to have the most fun, and often become quite publically inebriated. The fundamentalist Christians seem to become offended easily, to the everlasting delight of the atheists. Moderate Christians gently chide both of the former, and often offer an olive branch to people of opposing viewpoints. Muslims often complain (and with abundant reason) that they are judged harshly and compared with the extremists of their faith who behave little differently than extremist Christians have throughout the ages. Jews seem to take it all in stride.

Dewdrop Inn sometime....all the best, brian

We the honorable members and ruling class of Yahoo,("The Yahoo Brotherhood of Strong-Arms"),would cordially like to invite and welcome you this unique and very special catagory of Yahoo answers, know as R&S.

The rules are very simple and are spelled out in our easy to read 486 page manual of do and dont's. First rule and possibly the most important is: to never state what you actually believe...(others may be offended)...and we will let loose the Yahoo Watchdogs, in your direction. If you do wake up to numerous violation notices, in your e-mail box...please understand that appealing to our sense of fairness, is a lesson in futility,as we are uneffected by your whinning or logical presentations,in defense of your appeal. If you have a prayer request,or urgent need..please do not bother the good members in standing......please...log off R&S...petition your God quietly...then log back in. Have a good time...The Brother Hood.

P.S. Be advised that any attempt in prostelization by causing others to consider the possiblility of,and or to selfishly, draw one into a loving relationship with the creator of the universe, will be met with the full fury and swift and sure outstretched, omnipresent tentacles of the Yahoo Justice and Intelligence Committee...I only had one violation..maybe I got carried away) but,"Whatever"

All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man's life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom.
---Albert Einstein

An exercise in futility. An aggravating waste of time and energy. A mind-numbing, demoralizing experience. Sometimes humorous. Too often monotonous.
