My son isnt a "sweets" kinda kid. He enjoys all kinds of fruit however. I have seen how you can carve a basket out of a watermelon and think something similar would be a cute alternative like a car or truck or something "boyish". Any ideas how to do it websites would be great! Thanks!

Listen to Christopher! It does take alot of time and practive to do crafty carvings! Your two year old wont remember the time and effort you put into such crafting. If you are having a party, why dont you have cake anyway, however, add his favorite fruit somehow in a creative manner. For some kids, it is all about the presentation! He will be too busy with his guests and toys to worry about anything else! Try the following website for some kid friendly ideas! Good luck! (I just went through a two year old birthday myself, and chose the easy route of ordering a cake from the nearest bakery! She didnt eat cake, but she enjoyed blowing out the candles and picking the Minnie Mouse toy toppings off of the cake!)

Use your imagination and anyting is possible. You could create a toy town carving things out of fruit or anything - a dinasaur its a great idea. , recently a mum made cup cakes for her sons birthday but they were a semi sweat fruit cake variety and all the kids liked them. mix your fruit with fresh and dried and look on the internet.

make sure they can also have a treat, such as custard, frozen yoghurt or non-dairy treat instead or combine this with fresh fruit. You could carve a dinosaur out of fruit standing next to a jelly river or a choc custard mud pond. There are many alternatives to cake that can be just as exciting for the child. Frozen fruit is one sugestion. good luck

Fruit Box
You Will Need
2 recipes 9-inch square Basic Butter Cake or Coconut Cake
2 quarts favorite flavor ice cream
1/4 cup jam or preserves (raspberry, strawberry, or apricot are good choices), stirred until liquid
1 cup Apricot Glaze, warm
1 pound strawberries, hulled and cut in half
3-4 kiwifruit, peeled and thinly sliced
1/2 cup blueberries and red currants, to decorate

What to Do
1. Leave the ice cream at room temperature for 10 minutes to soften. Wrap two pieces of cardboard with foil and place a cake on each. Slice the domed tops off the cakes. Cut around the inside of each cake leaving a 1/2-inch shell on the sides and bottom.

2. Scoop out the insides of the cake. Fill the hollow centers of the cakes with the ice cream, packing it down firmly. Brush the cake with the jam and place one cake over the other, open-side down, to create a closed box. Press together firmly and wrap in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and freeze overnight.

3. Still on the cardboard, place the cake on a serving plate. Brush with a layer of glaze. Working quickly, stick strawberry halves and slices of kiwi all over the surface of the cake. Brush the fruit with more fruit glaze. Decorate with the fruit. Serve immediately or return to the freezer.

Yield: 9-inch cake

Below you'll find instructions for a melon basket. Great idea for a summer party. Another thought would be a Fresh Fruit Tarte. See second site below. Its for an Orange-Berry Tarte but any fruit or fruit combination will work just fine.

Try making an echidna(porcupine).
Place half a watermelon, round side up on a platter. Make skewers of fruit and place in to the watermelon to resemble needles, leaving the skewers long with the fruit close to the melon. Make the head with other pieces of fruit.

Carving those beautiful creations take a LOT of time and practice, so you might want to wait till he's older to appreciate the effort you put into it......Stealing a cue from the Semi-Homemade Goddess herself, Sandra Lee, watching one of her shows, she made a fantastic volcano cake out of angel's food cake......Not overly sweet there....and actually a guilt free dessert......If you'd like the recipe, email me at my profile page......Hope this helps!!! And Enjoy!!

Ok - you got some really great suggestions here...

My immediate thought was, Rice Krispy Treat Sheet!
It can be molded into any shape... It's easy to decorate...

Or - there's fruit sculpture:
