I always pray for anyone I know that has lost a loved member of their family, even just a quick prayer to God, when I see a news item that is about an fatalitiy or serious injury or imprisonment etc in any of life's situations.

The reason? because although I know God is reaching out to them to offer comfort, so many don't know this, and its to help soften and open their hearts to that comfort, so that they might be aware that they are not alone.

Because the family will be in grief. We pray to God because we wish Him to take them into His arms and comfort them. We hope they know that He is there for them as well as their family and friends. Plus, there is always the comfort that their loved one will be with the Father. We want to show the family that we care for them and are thinking of them, and that is one of the greatest ways!

they pray for the family because they know what a hard time they are going through. they have just lost a brother or sister, a daughter or son, a grandma or Grandpa, and aunt or uncle. they are dealing with one of the worst pains in the world: death. no one like being permanently separated from a loved one and when they leave this earth, its like they are gone. they pray for that family because they don't want them to have pain from a death. it is a very hard thing to go through and it is always nice to know that someone is thinking about you and praying for you because of a situation your in.

Catholics pray for the dead because we believe that the soul goes to purgatory first as a pence for sins committed in this world. Prayer helps those souls through this ordeal and helps them to be realized sooner and then on to Heaven.
This is from my memory of my religious teachings of forty years ago.

Everyone goes through a greiving process when their loved ones die. In order to cope better with life without their beloved, they might pray to whatever God they believe in to cope with their loss.

To comfort them. While we have great joy for our loved ones who return to Heavenly Father, we are often saddened by our own loss... being temporarily separated from someone we love.
