I am currently trying to mate my four and a half year old female chihuahua for the first time. The stud I've chosen has fathered one previous litter about five months ago with another *****. Her first sign of discharge was July first so this is about her twelfth day. He mounted her for the first time yesterday and they've been going at it all day today, unfortunately they have yet to tie. She's been showing she's ready, curling her tail to the side, backing into him, but everytime he mounts her he seems to have a lot of trouble getting his penis inside her vagina. I've held her for him but whenever I try to help him out he stops. Is there anything to be done to help them along?

I'm also highly aware of all the risks involved with breeding chihuahuas.

The male is a little over 2 years. They are both AKC registered chihuahuas and none of the puppies are for financial gain.

I have no clue where the person above me gets their information, but as far as I know, most reputable breeders do not use insemination, unless there is a problem.

There are a few things that could be the problem. First, if the stud isn't comfortable at your house, he will have problems. The fact that you are holding her while he is trying to mate, is probably doing more harm than good. You may have to send your female to the stud's house, so he will be more comfortable.

How old is the male? I know you said he has fathered another litter, but if he is getting older that may be the case. My males seem to slow down around 5-6 yr old and when they do, I have them neutered. Give them a couple more days. If nothing happens, wait until her next heat and try another male.

From the form of canines you have evidently which you do not choose to reproduce them, except certainly one of them is a coach canines and you in basic terms did not say. the female is a mixture, so no coach canines there, so my next question is why has she not been spayed via now. that must be the to blame concern to do and often is the healthiest concern for her. Do you have any theory how dramatically the percentages pass up for an intact female bobbing up maximum cancers, sugar diabetes, etc. and the longer she maintains to be intact the better the percentages pass. If value is a ingredient, you may touch some community animal rescue companies or your community society for the prevention of cruelty to animals company and ask for tips or courses for spaying at decreased costs.

You know I have a small brown female chi that is doing the same thing. I had never seen that problem before either. She is standing and flagging. And the male, a blue, is trying with all his might. But things just keep "slipping" away. I had began to think she had a congenital deformity of that area in some way so that he couldn't penetrate. I have never seen anything like it in all the years of puppies we have had. At least I know I am not the only one with a dog like this. I even tried putting her with another male just in case it was the boy.

I am hopeful that she may have been impregnated anyway even without a tie or that perhaps they tied without me seeing it. If you find out any more information on this please email me. I had never seen it before and wondered if I was the only one with this issue.

edit-- At one am Sat morning the small brown chi tied with a 6mo old male puppy on the couch no less. I guess she was just more interested in the younger dogs. It wasn't my first choice for the daddy, but it's ok. I heard whining and got up to go investigate because the dogs weren't in bed with us, and there they were, on my white couch locked in a passionate moment. Maybe it was just a timing problem. I really wanted her to mate with the blue one though.

You obviously are not a professional breeder and it's safe to say you are a bakcyard breeder. Most reputable breeders insiminate the embryos into the female. Have you gotten the gentics testing done? How about lineage from at least three generations back from the male and female? Do both dogs meet breed standard? If you answered no to any of these please take the time to do your research and think about why you are breeding. It should be to preserve the integrity of the breed and not for money.

Yes - get your dog spayed. Problem solved!
There are 122,958 dogs up for adoption on Petfinder tonight. Of these, 4546 are Chis. Please consider that you are adding to the crisis of pet overpopulation by breeding.

Spay and neuter. That should solve the problem.
