if your state is one where the title is sent you you, then you just need to get a lien release from the finance company. keep the lien release with the title if you should decide to sell the car,

the lien holder needs to send a lien release to the county clerks office and have the lien removed from the title. I just went thru the process trying to get the lien off of my truck after I paid it off. I had a copy of the release but the office told me that the lien holder had to send it in to them and then they had to record the release, and only then could the lien be revoked. It took 3 trips to the clerks office.

If there is a lienholder on the title, the car is not paid off. If the car is paid off then there is some mistake. Call that lienholder now. You may have a loan on a car that you think you own but actually don't.

Finance co are real bad at removing their interest on cars, I had to threaten to take one 2 court as I had paid off the car and wanted to sell it.
took them 6 weeks after I'd paid the car out.
