The average is about 18,000 miles a yr.
Preferable highway miles. It's better to purchase a car from someone who used there vehicle more-so to travel. Also, make sure all maintenance was kept up with. Tune ups, oil changes etc. Also, better to purchase from an independent owner rather than a car lot. The majority get them from auctions.

A lot depends on where you live. Cars in the Northeast tend to have a lot fewer miles on them than, say, cars in Montana. Typical mileage in the West is 10-14,000 miles per year (at least that's what I see when I'm looking at cars in the Seattle area.)
