I can totally understand the attorney's stance as its job security for him ; )

They are fine. These punks get together and commit the crimes. Its pretty rare to get these guys committing crimes solo. They're weak little cowards that only have power in their "packs". Take away their pack and they have lost that power.

The other "gangstas" they are not allowed to congregate with are listed on orders of their own. They don't get put on the lists arbitrarily. They are on each other's lists because they are know to commit crimes together. Most on probation or parole currently.

I know you have all heard it before, but the only way I see a criminal being rehabilitated is by taking him out of his environment. By not allowing him to "hang" with the same idiot thugs that he was getting in trouble with before, you are essentially taking him out of that environment.

Is there an intelligent arugment against that?

My initial thought is that they would be unconstitutional violations of freedom of assembly and freedom of speech.

I'm not surprised at the Supreme Court ruled that way in 1999, though given recent decisions, if the case were retried, the current Bench is likely to rule the other way.

That being said, I don't believe people should be punished for engaging in social interaction, just because that gives them the opportunity to commit a crime. Punish them if they break the law. But talking to people, or hanging out with people, is not breaking the law.
