mexico s GDP (ppp) in 2006 was an estimate of 1.134 trillions, which gives a per capita income of 11,249 . this means that the minimum wage in mexico could be around 700 usd? maybe even 800....give or take? then why is the minimun wage of less than 150 usd a month? if the minimun wage was higher mexicans would not migrate....if it were of 800 usd a month then fewer mexicans would try to go to america..still wages would be much much higer in the USA, but it would seem less atractive to leave. so why doesnt AMerica force the goverment of mexico to raise the wages for national security? illegal inmigration would be less dramatic. it could do it under the table...not oficially...as not to threaten mexicos sovereignity publicly. MExicans wouldn have more money and could buy even more american goods...

The rich - poor gap is huge.

A very few people are fabulously wealthy, a few are middle class, and a whole lot are poor.

Without the American escape valve from poverty, there would be a huge revolution as the poor get fed up with this, and overthrow the rich. That's why the rich and the government encourage the poor to go to the US. Otherwise they'd have a revolution to deal with.

First of all, you have to realize that price controls - whether on goods or labor - simply don't accomplish that sort of thing. When you put a price floor on something, you reduce the demand for it to while below the suply, creating a surplus. A surplus of labor is otherwise known as Unemployment. Currently, unemployment is actually low in Mexico, though under-employment is a problem. So, while life would be good for those Mexicans that kept thier jobs, there would be even /more/ with good reason to run to north looking for work.

Second, per capita income is not all it's cracked up to be. Mexico has a much more significant rich/poor gap than America does. Mexico isn't exactly a 'poor' country in terms of GDP, but, it is a poverty-stricken one.

That would be great,it really would ...only thing is it would undermine a certain sort of social order, a long established social order ...1.old money and well connected politicos 2. business owners 3. profesionals 4. rank and file government workers 5. the working poor. 6. the destitute. it is in certain peoples vested interest to maintain the status quo.....one must remember the world's richest man Carlos Slim is a Mexican citizen.

And why is it the job of the US to try to force the rich in Mexico to share their wealth? Basically, you are saying, either fix their government for them, or let them all come here?
First off, the ones who come here are criminals, shown they have no regard for laws, so I am not too concerned for their welfare. Just as I don't worry about the welfare of our inmates in prison. I was a guard, I know what they are like.
But now it has come down to us making another nation change its' ways? Didn't we get blasted for that when we went into Iraq? We are told that we push our ideals on other countries as it is. Now we have to deal with this too? And all for a bunch of people who are telling us to "go back to Europe" and committing crimes above the one of coming here illegally?
Anything else you want? Slippers? Evening paper? Feet licked?
We aren't your dogs.

The fact that mexico has the 12th largest GDP, should be embarrassing to mexicans. Despite having plenty of resources, none of it seems to go towards making life better for its people.
You should revolt against your corrupt mexican government instead of taking the easy way out and coming to America

What is Mexico’s economy like anyway? Why do they come here?

You basically have two Mexico’s. The have’s and the have not’s..
The have’s son’s goes to Universities and nice schools. They have medical care and police protection.
High fences surround their huge villa’s and the security police it 24 hours a day.

Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim Helu has overtaken Microsoft founder Bill Gates as the richest person in the world; on the Mexican financial website Sentido Comun Reported.

Forbes in April had pegged Slim’s wealth at a staggering 53.1 billion. Slim, the son of Lebanese immigrants has had business in his blood from his early days when he helped out in the shop.
“The Star of the Orient” However he was born into the have’s because he went to a University which the average Mexican son does not do. He belongs to the 30% of the richest men in Mexico.

Then you have the 18% who have high paying jobs working for the elite rich usually as CEO’s and other people in the higher income bracket. They are educated and part of a very small middle class.
They are given health care, pensions, in some cases profit sharing, even a retirement package.

Fifty-three percent of Mexico’s population of 104 million live in poverty, which is defined as living on less than 2 dollars a day. World Bank data show.

They run the factory’s ; become security guards for the elite rich and out of the average pay of $62. Per month the pay 10% in taxes. Which leaves them $2. A day in earnings.
As bad as that sounds, women do not fair near so well. They earn a dollar a day working as one of the many servants in the households of the elite rich.
This amount of money will not buy enough food, or clothes, it barely pays the rent on the worse shacks imaginable. To supplement their income they have to grow food and most of this slave class has to work two jobs. Which is hard to imagine since they work 12 hour days for this amount of money.
With one day off a week.

Mr. Carlos Slim Helu wants to get into The philanthropic front. Which he has been talking to former Democratic president Clinton about. So he has decided to donate a few dollars to an orphanage.
These are abandoned children because their parents are unable to feed them.
These people do not have access to health care their children die for diseases that we have immunization shots for There is no pensions or any kind of a retirement package.
There children do not go to school or in some cases cannot read or write. Many starve to death before they live long enough to grow up. They are treated worst than slaves. They are not represented in the courts.
They do not vote or have a say so in the government. No black slave in the south was treated worse.
When they get to old to work they sell gun and candy on the beach or in the streets to survive.
When young girls grow up they are sold to the rich to use as sex slaves. The young men go to work in the fields when they are old enough to pick produce. From 6 years old you see these little boys carrying heavy bricks. Little girls hired to work in houses as attendants are used for sex and no one notices because the poor have no say so. When these girls later marry it is a given that former employers have been using them for years for sex.

One man said, “when I escaped and went to the USA and got a job, doing a man’s lawn I made more money than I was paid in a month in Mexico. Later I got a job in the building industry and sent home to my mother who was still raising children from the man whom she worked for. They do not take care of these women’s babies even though they are their own children. They are just part of this untouchable slave class.
After earning a good wage I was able to send a mere $100 per month home to my mother so she could get out of this household and take care of her children. It completely changed her life and gave her dignity.
Would I risk my life to come to American? Yes, as much as we are hated here we are treated worse in Mexico.”

Because the rich people in Mexico like it that way. Mr.Slim didn't get to be the richest man by being fair, he did it by having a monopoly on telecommunications in Mexico and price gouging his own people.

Let them fix their own problems, the illegals have no problem coming here and sucking the life blood out of our resources, go home and complain. That's what revolutions are for and you probably won't lose many more to your government than you have to the desert. But then you'd have something to show for those deaths!

What about OUR people who need help? They would be happy to 'buy more American goods' as well.
