They are creating great damage to the eco-system as they are not native fish and they eat what the native fish species eat. They number in the thousands. They have had a lot of media coverage lately due to the fact they jump out of the water, sometimes 8-12 feet per leap. They also can weigh from a few pounds to 20lbs each. The Carp react to the vibrations of boat motors and contrary to some others answers here....they are NOT jumping out of "aggression" They are now in several rivers in Illinois, but have not yet migrated to the Great Lakes. There is anticipation that they will though, very soon unless their numbers are decreased. Several cable and satellite hunting shows have aired showing how these fish are being shot mid-air by bow-fishermen using bows and arrows. They will actually jump into boats by themselves, and a few sportsmen have suffered minor injuries by being struck by jumping Carp. I hate asian carp and feel bad for fisherman specifically in the midwest. however some have actually went into the great lakes I heard and the states that are on the mississippi or w/e river it was on they tried to pass bills on making walls so that they cannot enter the great lakes and damage the fishing industry/recreation.

Aggressive and fiesty fish that could end up causing billions of dollars in lost revenue. I saw a TV report on them. The report showed the Asian Carp jumping out of the water as a sign of aggression. I think they haven't yet reached the Great Lakes but those in charge are building up roadblocks to make sure they don't get in.
