Generally you brush in the direction that the coat grow or with the coat. But if you are brushing a dog in the springtime when it is blowing coat you brush against to get the under coat out and then brush with the coat.

The key to answering your question correctly is knowing what breed you have. Brushing of any dog depends on coat type. Brushing a beagle requires a different technique than brushing a bichon. :-)

You usually should brush it in the direction of the hair growth. If not you could pull the dogs hair and hurt it...

Brush with the fur not against the fur or it will probably hurt. If your dog is long-haired then you should start at the bottom and move up.

comb in the direction your dogs hair grows, just like you'd brush your own hair.
