I have a hole in my gum behind my last tooth in the back of my mouth. What could be going on? I don't have any insurance for going to a dentist as I have Tenncare PHP and they don't offer any dentristry care. What can I do to prevent it from getting any worse? I think that I can touch the bone when I put my finger back there. We don't have much money but I want to get something done because I don't want it to get any worse. Where can I go? What can I do to prevent it from getting worse. It doesn't hurt but I am very worried.

If you're short on money and you're near a university/college that has a DDS program you could inquire if they are accepting new patients. The students may do the work but they are closely supervised.

It sounds like you might have chipped a tooth and it has rotted slightly. This happened to me, you'll need a filling. Try finding a drop in dentist in your area or see if you can find a cheaper dentist. You might also need to buy a pretty strong mouthwash. This problem won't clear up on its own but in the mean time don't have sugary foods and don't drink milk close to bedtime

I'm a dentist.

"A hole in my gum" can be a lot of things--some of them harmless, some of them very serious.

Bite the bullet and schedule an appointment with your dentist. The doctor will be able to tell you, at very least, whether or not it's something about which to worry.

I understand not having insurance, but this really doesn't sound like it should wait. Depending on where you live, most counties, have dentist who see patients without insurance on a sliding scale basis. An oral surgeon would most likely be the best person to see. Also if you smoke, stop. Best of luck.
