Dogs of any age can get kennel cough. However, there are many other causes for coughing. In a small breed dog is could be a congenital problem with the trachea. It can also be a sign of heart problems.
A hacking cough does sound rather like kennel cough. Please take the dog to the vets, it clearly needs attention and no one on here can diagnose. You should always take an animal to the vets when you're worried about it.

First off, your dog isn't a Puggle. There's no such thing. It's a mutt mix between a Pug and a Beagle and named a "Puggle" so that someone could charge you a ridiculous sum of money since it had a cutesy name. In other words, you were ripped off. Your dog isn't a "Puggle" another more than my Newf/Lab is a "Newfador". It's a mixed breed dog - PERIOD.
What has the vet said, as surely you had this dog FULLY checked out when you bought it, right? Or did you just bring it home - assuming that it's fine because the greedy seller told you it was?
YES - any dog can get bordatello - kennel cough. ESPECIALLY one that came from a backyard breeder or pet store where they probably don't bother to get vet care for the animals. Or it could have a lung infection. Or it could have Parvo. Or it could be any number of things.
Turn off the computer. Get in your car. Take the dog to the vet. No one can tell what is wrong with your dog over the internet.

Coughing followed by a dry vomit or vomiting clear fluid in an otherwise happy dog is probably kennel cough, especially if recently boarded.
However there are resriratory problems and anotomical problems that may cause the problem also. You need to see a good vet to determine the difference.
Occasionally, stuff can get cought, but that is rare.. Dr W

If the coughing comes after pressure on the dog's neck - like if the dog pulls on it's leash, then it is most likely a condition called collasping trachea. There is no treatment to correct it except training the dog to not pull.
A chronic cough can be a sign of a heart murmur or enlarged heart.
A cough along with poor body condition or weight loos is a sign of tapeworm.

my girlfriend has a puggle and as i watched her dog get into everything, i would say she probably got into something that irritated her throat, i would first take her to the vet,( i know that is the first thing everyone says) but in your case i think the vet is a great idea. has she drank any water? or eaten anything?

My dog coughs a lot. I don't think it is that bad. If it continues for more than a day, then I'd get the vet. It could be a serious health problem. If her nose is hot and dry then she has a cold.

I've had 7 poodles. want my advice? GET HER TO A VET RIGHT AWAY. I had one that had burrs stuck in her throat, and she very nearly died from it. dogs will pick up anything, I'm sure you've heard all the warnings about chicken bones? that they splinter and get caught inside the body? and there's lots of other things.

look for a small bone or stone in her throat never feed your dog chicken bones anything that can be dangerous to us is dangerous to them and yes kennel cough is airborne and i,ve nown dogs as young as 10months get it, have her checked at the vets, there isn,t too much they can do for it but we have successfully treated it with childrens cough mixture ,it might have gone on its own who knows but it went, so wether i can put that down to the mixture i,ll never be sure

id say ur best bet is go to the vet if it is non stop since it is ur first dog you dont have much experience in the area. if coughing continues go to the vet. dont try to figure it out yourself.
hope all goes well! :D
