You could try Biblical prayer, pray God's Word back to Him. Read and study the Bible. That is the clearest way that I hear God, through His Word. Trust and obey. I have never heard an audible voice, but I know when God is trying to get my attention. For instance I might read a verse or passage of scripture that "speaks" to my heart.
Another thing that helps me is Christian music, music that is based on scripture, it gets through to me in ways that touch my soul and inspire me to live for Him.
Coming to God with a clean heart is also a vital part of prayer. Prayers are hindered when we don't repent of sins.

I read this book by an author called Phillip Yancey . the book is called "Disappointment with God" The book is in a way to me more of a study and a quest of Gods personal relationship with man then and now.
back in the days God has been involved with man on a physical level where his presence was not only felt but actually seen by many prophets especially moses. It speaks of the prophets' unimaginable confidence in God and his powers, like the time when Elisha commanded the thounder bolt from the sky.
The question now is " Why is God hidden and why is he silent when so many things is happennig around us?" Men's actions thoruoghout the years is the known cause for that and the lack of faith instilled in pass generations and more to come so i guess its really man's fault that when they pray a burning bush dont really talk back to them.
There isnt a specific technique to hearing Gods voice. God speaks to us everyday in almost every single way possible like showing us signs and performing miracles. Ive personally known alot of people who were called by God - if you are a chrisitan, then you were actually called, but not by his voice or presence.
i could go on and on about this but i highly suggest you read the book by phillip yancey - it just might answer some of those burning issues that you got with God that you need answers to.

Keep praying, KEep believing, Keep loving God and obeying all you know to obey. BElieve He will talk to you, confes that, and wait. IT will come. Dont become impatatient as along the way there is so much to Learn, but it will come if you beieve it confess it and know your miracles will all come if you wait pateiently and expect them. Faith still moves mountains . I did this and I tell you what, no only did I know God was there, eventually I heard His voice, sometimes thru something that would happen, and often even audibly speaking to me. WOWOWO. And I continued to love and obey as I do now, and blessings come from obedience. ANd now God is giving me so many gifts, not only the gifts of tongues, and discernment, but He is giving me prophecy of these last days to tell the world and the church. Some will hear and some will reject. But God says its my job to live truth and be fully obedient To Him, To speak truly in love, yet boldly without fear or compromise, and leave the conficting to the Holy Sprit > When we do that, you wont believe it, just how much you will be blessed to overflow.
Disobedience leads to curse and death. IF we wont obey what we know now, why would God give us more????
think on that one. IF we want more blessings , more gifts and more last day revelation, we need to obey. There is no other way, just as Jesus obeyed the Father. amen

Dude: The first step is to make peace with him since God only listens to the prayers of his children. Say: Lord, I repent of my sins and accept Jesus as my Lord and saviour. After that you are ready to go. When you pray just tell God what's in your mind, pausing occasionally to listen. He speaks in several ways, mainly by putting thoughts in your mind, like your conscience, just stronger.
I also suggest that you begin to read the Bible, just ten minutes per day. Attending a good church is also a good idea. You will not be disappointed.

God is extremely polite and does not talk while we are busy with our own non-stop chatter whether in our heads or aloud.
Learn to practice the habit of holy silence. Quiet your mind. Stop thinking. Stop praying. God comes in a still small voice when you are silent and ready to hear.

I agree with the earlier posts, about clearing your life of distractions and concentrate on making time for God, free of worldly distractions.
Its really sad how you asked a legitimate spiritual question, and so many non-believers had to just jump in with unfair jokes and mockery.

If you are not earnest in your prayer you may as well be talking to a wall. Ask God to give you the wisdom to understand and to realize that God answers prayers in mysterious ways and are not always in the way we ask. and always remember that God's will be done.

Well the reason you can't hear God when you pray is because you are Praying. Pray is talking to God. It is not till you Meditate that you are listen to God. You must quite youself first. MEDITATE
