5th Commandment: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me. (Exodus 20:5)

Deut. 4:24- For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

Such a jealous and angry entity certainly doesn't fit the definition of a god.

Sol: God said it himself and took the attribute upon himself. Not I. I thought that was made pretty obvious as the passage was in the 'Lord's' first person.

JB- Then why, if he is omnipotent, didn't he make us more like him? He created after all... right?

Allyouneedislove: Are you serious?? Of course man would make up a god like this, or the publishing companies would find it too bland to sell in bookstores! Have you read about the millions murdered in the Bible? The stoned infants? The slaves and maltreated women? No wonder the Bible is a bestseller! People love this stuff!

Anything that is supposed to be omnipotent would have foreseen what we as humans would do and therefore would go about it with a total lack of emotion. Emotions are human qualities and if they are attributed to deities it is because the human mind created deities in our own image and not the other way around.

God is sovereign over everything and all His creation. He is "jealous" because He desires his creation to operate under His laws. When they do not, then God's judgment is imposed. It is the part of the law of Justice which is an eternal law that God himself follows. God created man in His image. That includes the fact that God has emotions, which are perfectly just and righteous. He does not inflict anger and rage willy-nilly. He operates under perfect laws. One of these is the Law of the Harvest. You sow what you reap. And for obeying laws there is always a blessing and disobedience always brings a punishment in the divine justice.

Another way that man is like God is that he was created with the capacity to choose good or evil. But man is not completely like God who always chooses good. Man is rebellious and therefore is subject to the justice of God when he goes against the law of justice.

God knew that man would not always choose the good. In fact, God knew very well the man would sin. So before the creation of the world God prepared a Savior for man. "The Lamb slain before the foundation of the world", knowing that imperfect man could not live free of sin and would also not be able to pay for those sins, as one sin banishes man from the presence of God forever without a Savior. That is why only the sacrifice of a perfect sinless God would save. And that is why the Mercy of God tempers the Justice of God.

Where did the word angry enter this picture? And last I checked, jealousy was not a sin.

If you go on the read verse 6 in Exodus, it says:
"but showing mercy to thousands, TO THOSE WHO LOVE ME and KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS."

We can't quote part of the bible, and expect to get the whole picture. God is jealous when we worship idols and things that can't possibly bring us any joy. I think you got it wrong here: God wouldn't be a a God at all if he didn't envy our praise!

You have it back words, Man received jealousy from God. You last line kills your point, if you were god, which you are not, but if you where, and you created everything, nothing exists that you did not create, would YOU share any of the glory with a tree, rock, bird, man any thing, think about it. no you would not, Give credit where credit is due, God does not reward second best. Because he is the best

It is hilarious to see so many ignorant responses on here, I am laughing so hard.
It is quite obvious this God is a man made God, we created God and have given him all our human attributes and characteristics. Jealousy is human ,has nothing to do with Godliness. How can people be so blind not to see the truth?

That is because humans wrote a fictional book about a fictional being, and gave the so called "God" feelings..

One of the many flaws in the bible..

Well, it fits the definiton of a good old-fashioned Greek or Roman god, perhaps. As for the all-knowing, all-forgiving Christian version of a god... not so much. Chalk it up to another inconsistency within this religion among a sea of irreconcilable differences.

of course. God created man in his likeness so why should he be so different from us. if your galfren went out with somebody else won't you get jealous??? God feels the same when you ditch him for other thing.

First, God gave man the trait of jealousy...man just has a warped idea of it. Consider even recent history...when did it become an altogether bad thing to be jealous?
If you love someone, you would be jealous (think of married couple) if they took to someone else.

I completely agree with you. It confuses me the same.

I believe that these were Human traits given to God BY HUMANS.

God deserves much more credit than that.
