A card that identifies you to the merchant so that they can track how much business you do with them and allows them to reward there more loyal customers.

Example: Borders Rewards has an account ties up to it where discount points accumulate and I get increasing discounts the more I buy. (I got a lot of free stuff in January after my Christmas shopping.)
