i've always heard in movies "I CALL SHOTGUN!!", but what does it really mean? and where did it come from?

Yelling, "I got shotgun!!" means you get dibs on the front passenger seat.
It comes from old West where they had stagecoaches. The driver had a guard that sat up on top of the stage next to him. Typically, the guard carried a shotgun.
And that is where the phrase came from, and what it means.

In the old west, the man who sat next to the driver of the stagecoach always carried a shotgun (or a rifle) to defend against Indians or robbers.
