...I got to thinking about how Jesus flew into a rage and overturned the money tables and stuff that time (in Jerusalem) in the temple...
...I wondered is my mom's church beginning to become like that temple and will I flip out one day like the Lord did?

I mean, I'm sure the Lord would not want me to go off ever, and the church that she goes to does do good things that I can see, but I wanted to touch base with the folks because that thought just came to mind...

The mormon church rents the temple clothes, inside the temple. They also have a cafe.
They're just cashing in on the people that are already there.

I did some quick research.
There r 2 incidents; where Jesus
visits the temple and turns over the tables.
The 1st 1 is earlier on in his ministry.
It is spring, & they r on their way 2 Jerusalem to attend
the Passover of 30 C.E. While there, his disciples see something
about Jesus that they perhaps have not seen b-4.
@ the time animal sacrifices were sill required, so, for convience,
merchants sell right inside in the temple + cheating & price gouging.
Filled w/ indignation, Jesus makes a whip of ropes & drives the sellers out.
He pours out the coins of the $ changers & overturns the tables.
"Take these things away from here!"
"Stop making the house of my Father a house of merchandise!"
John 2:12-22; Matt.13:55; Luke 4:23.
The 2nd incident, was just a few days b-4 the end of his human life.
It is late March, spring of 33C.E.
Just as he did 3 yrs., earlier Jesus throws out those
selling & buying in the temple & overturns the tables
of the $ changers & the benches of those selling doves.
He does not even allow n/e1 to carry a utensil through the temple.
Condeming those who r changing $ & selling animals in the temple,
he says: "It is not written, 'My house will b called a house of prayer
for all the nations'? But u have made it a cave of robbers."
The tale continues on considering the fig tree from the a.m. before.
Also, some Gentiles r there also, & request of Phillip to see Jesus.
Matt. 21:12,13,18,19; Mark 11:12-18; Luke 19:45-48; John 12:20-27.
We know that Jesus wouldn't want u to
'lose it' ; u know 'flip out'....
the Zeal for Jehovah's house of worship will burn in some.
I think U need to pray & think long and hard over this.
Since it does bother YOU, apparently.
We ALL need to examine our place of worship.
Is it teaching the truth.
Is the congregation "living" in and by the truth
of God's word and His Son's?
If it's Not, You Must, Get OUT OF HER!!!
edit:
Do YOU hear these ppl!!!!
"I think its o.k."
WHAT?!!? #?"{+(*@@!%*
R U ppl NUTZZ?
Yes, they were charging exorbitant prices.
THAT! is NOT the only nor MAIN reason Jesus
Said WHAT he said!!!!
READ the Scriptures again &
FOCUS on WHAT JESUS SAID!!
Not just his actions!

I do not think that Jesus was so upset about the men selling things at the temple as He was about htem ripping people off and possibly conducting business on the Sabbath.
I don't think it is wrong for a church to have a bookstore and even a coffee shop (though the church I attended gave the coffee for free after service) It is not wrong for a church to raise funds in order to maintain and operate the church- there are still expenses that have to be met. I would be very careful , however, about the motives for selling those things from the church building, to keep the selling in the lobby or fellowship area and outside of the actual sanctuary, that business not be conducted during service, and that business not be conducted on the Sabbath

Actually James, as the generations have changed their worship styles, this is just one more change in venue. I personally thought it was strange at first too, but realizing that Jesus preached anywhere to anyone, tells me that we don't have to have stained glass windows and pews to make it a church. I believe if Jesus walked this earth today, He would be in the bars and the coffee shops, the prisons telling people the Good News. Don't worry about what they have, as long as they are preaching the truth, they should be fine!

I really don't see a problem with that. There was more to the story of Jesus overturning the money changers. There were making dirty deals, charging more than they should. It was just corrupt. I would say that this Book Store and coffee house is not in the same area where they have worship services or sunday school. If this is the case then I don't see any problem with it.

I am torn on this one- I do have doubts with BIG churches because of the money and how it is only making the church bigger and "better" but seriously do we really NEED all of that? NO!
Do we need big screen tvs on stage? Lights flashing during worship? NO!
I go to a very small church, we do barbecues after church once in a great while for fellowship, and it is a donation-- so you do not have to give money if you do not have any, you can eat, and everyone can eat.

Hi James...
There is a church in my town that is rather large and they put on bake sales/rummage sales, etc..
I recently saw them advertise in the paper that they now accept Visa/Mastercard for their products. They also have suppers on Wed night and the members have to pay for their supper..
My church does not believe in buying/selling in there..
We have fellowship suppers at church once a month which I don't see anything wrong with it...
A lot of the big churches have become commercialized and thats so sad...

The money tables were turned over due to the dishonesty taking place.
The book store and coffee house is a good touch. It offers a place to sit read and enjoy fellowship with other Christians. This book store and coffee shop might be the only way to get some people to come to church.

LOL, maybe if it becomes too commercial.
However, both a coffee house and bookstore can have community value. I'm grateful for bookstores in church, because those books/cds are hard to find in the Northeast. Coffee house can encourage people to actually hang out with other parishioners and get to know each other. But if pastors start wearing Pepsi and Nabisco logos, and they put in a mall, I say you would be right to turn over tables!!!!!

Read the scripture again a lot of churches have book stores and cafe's however they are not selling anything with a claim of salvation or any other blessing because of the purchase, and many of the cafe's in churches are free or on a free will donation basis.
