Spare the rod, spoil the child.

You have to look at this both ways...the child is smart enough to know that there are people like you out there who will point the finger at the parent and frown because they have given their child a smack for misbehaving..so the child will play up even more.If the parent doesn't smack the child the child has got away with the bad behavior and feels they can do what ever they want when out in public. The parent must not give in to the child and must keep the child in line no matter where they are. The parent doesn't only feel threatened by the child but also by people like you. So they must ignore people like you in order to make the child realize that they are in charge regardless of where they are. The smack is generally not a forceful and damaging one but hard enough to pull the child into line. Try putting yourself into their shoes and see how you would deal with the problem.

I am mom to 3, step mom to 3, and grandma to 2, and I don't believe in hitting children! I'm with you, o.p. My children get time outs, loss of priviledges and chores when they misbehave, and they know/knew that they would get to pick one small item at the store if they behaved when they were little. My granddaughters are learning the same way.

I think that discipline is very important, but it doesn't have to be in the form of physical violence.

Proper discipline is a must. In fact, more people should keep their children in line. This is not coming from a parent but a single person who hates it when parents can't control their offspring.

Sounds like normal parenting to me. That's how we were raised. Just these damn liberals these days sticking their noses where they don't belong that makes a normal parent seem like a bad person just for disciplining their child. I don't see where the parent was wrong in this situation, sorry.

When those parent are little their parent treat them that way. So when they grow up they are likely to treat their children at the same way.

I agree with the poster that says proper discipline is a must. (This includes corporal punishment when it is needed.)

Not a very big fan of your self righteousness.
