In addition to the cars already mentioned I'd thrown in the Cadillac CTS. It is a RWD drive vehicle same as the G35 and BMW 3-series.

Other competitors like the Acura TL and Audi A4 V6 have similar price/performance characteristics, but are FWD platforms. May not make a difference to most people, but driving "purists" tend to value RWD heavily over FWD.

BMX 3 series, Benz C-class, Lexus IS series, Acura TL. Other than that, nothing of quality compares for the price (33-35K)

Although it's not quite up to par with the bmw 3 series, it is considered a competitive car.

Don't get me wrong, the g is a great car, but the bmw is the best.
