I heard that everyone should drink 6-8 cups of water daily. The amount of calories you eat really depends on your height and current weight... do you want to lose or gain or stay the same or just plain be health? If you don't already exercise, then you should start slow and don't do anything extreme, otherwise your muscles are going to hurt like crazy.
I am 5'5" and generally eat 1200 calories when I'm watching... haha -- which isn't often! Most adults should eat anywhere between 1200 and 1600, depending on height.

A good rule of thumb is half your body weight in ounces. For example, if you way 160 pounds, drink 80 ounces of water daily.
As for calories and exercise, I agree with what some of the others have said...it's a very individual thing. The number of calories you should eat depends on your age and activity level, and it depends if you want to lose or maintain weight.
As a starting point, consider having a trainer at a health club assess your overall physical fitness and history, as well as suggest a plan for you. Initial consultations are oftentimes free.

at least 8 glasses a day but actually 0.5oz on every pound of your body weight (e.g. if you weight 150lbs then you need 75oz of water a day which is 9 and a half glasses)
to know how many calories a day you need go to yahoo search enter "daily calorie intake calculator" and check out several sites because they vary a bit
exercising - to get in better shape and maintain 3 days a week cardio for 30-50min and a couple of days a week of weight training
for weight loss - 4-6 days a week cardio for average of 45min and light weight training 2-3 days a week (light weights, high amount of reps)

drink as much water as you possibly can, the more the better, and on hot days you probably need MORE than 8-10 glasses... I can drink that much water almost in one sitting if I am hot..

Depends on your body size and your physical activity .
One size does NOT fit all and looking for it as if everyone has the same genetics , body size and activity regimen will get you in real trouble .
Get with info that is specific to you and what you are doing . ( office worker or construction worker or athlete or what ? )
