Is it really necessary to have a birth certificate in addition to photo ID while crossing the border?
The reason being that my boyfriend and his father are coming to visit, from Ohio (US) to Ontario (Canada), and in order to cross the border I've read on various websites that all of the passengers require a birth certificate and a drivers license. My boyfriend does not currently have his birth certificate with him as he regularly resides in Kansas. (His parents are no longer together). So his birth certificate is unaccessible.
So!! To make a long question short: can he still make it through without a birth certificate? Will just his drivers license suffice?
He's getting pretty anxious, and although I personally think he'll get through just fine - I think some alternative opinions will help ease his worries.

I would just contact the records clerk where he was born pay the $15 and have one mailed to him and actually some counties you can do it right online and they mail it out. I would never leave the country with out a passport or birth certificate not the way things are today..

Please try and get his birth certificate. A drivers license is great because it shows his picture on government issued ID. The birth certificate IS needed though because that is the document that shows what his citizenship is. (I'm going to assume he doesn't have a passport because a birth certificate is the primary document needed for that)

A drivers license does not show proof of citizenship and that is what he will need. A birth certificate or whatever that shows he is an American citizen.
To make life easier and it IS coming why dont people apply for Passports now? When it comes down to crunch time its going to take a really long time to get one -

He needs a birth certificate. He may be just fine going into Canada, but the US has tightened their requirements and he will need his birth certificate to get back into the US. They have significantly tightened their regulations since 9/11. There are agencies that will overnight your birth certificate - I think it costs about $50.
