I started with the bedroom because of the need for sleep during the transition period. I also had home repairs going on at the same time, because the house I bought was not turn key. My living room set, for about one year, was a 1 1/2 ft. by 2 ft. folding end table and two folding lawn chairs. And a 20 inch TV, which I still have as my only TV. Not a big TV fan. Between work, moving, and home repairs there wasn't much time for TV.

Depends on where you spend the most time. If you spend time in your living room, start there, but if you spend more time in the bedroom, good bedroom furniture and a great mattress are a good investment. Used furniture, especially on craigslist or a consignment shop can be great because you could get a higher quality furniture than say Big Lots. Having to buy one piece at a time and borrow a truck is a real pain, but worth it if you get nice furniture at a good price. Just don't fall for those "no payment no interest" ads from furniture stores. There are tons of hidden costs and the interest rates are outrageous (like 21%) once they start charging you. Also, if you miss a payment, they will charge you back interest. Oh, if you have an Ikea near you, you can get some pretty cool furniture very reasonably!

You should have a bed so start with the bedroom. Instead of a sofa, why not a couple of chairs with ottomans? The ottomans can then be moved around for extra seating if needed. Try to buy new if possible and have things delivered. Most furniture stores do not charge for delivery within a certain radius.

Stay away from the yard sales - you never know what unwanted bonus (creatures) you will bring into your new home.

There are some great second hand stores if you look around & of course, Big Lots & little stores like that. Also, google "tatouage" - I love this product. It is like a mural, but quicker, cheaper & easier.
Best of all if you don't like it you can just paint right over it.
