Oh i'm sorry George a little typing error , not to good at it i'm afraid.

Can i just say one thing , i am hopeless at geography but i would know that Americans are not Canadian , and i also know there is a difference between COUNTRIES , States and cities. Does this make me smug or smart ? I don't think so.
Oh and to that other A*****E yes i am a Brit , but i'm not English.

Well... that depends on the idiot Americans you're referring to,because I've studied my geography enough to know that Scotland and Ireland are their own individual countries, and that Wales is divided along the Western border of England, but together they all make up Britain. But my question for you is:What kind of native are you if you can't spell Britain correctly?Dingbat.Check you're spelling, lol! As for me,I live in the exclusive providence of Bachania-you figure out where it is!

It is not just Americans who use the word England to cover the UK. Most Europeans do the same. However we can be equally loose in our terminology. The Brits often annoy Canadians by referring to them as Americans. Many of the people in the Iberian peninsula do not like the general description 'Spanish'. The people of Holland hate us using the term Dutch since we clearly are mistaking them for Germans.

300 million people is an awful lot to put into one group and make on sweeping generalization about. Keep in mind that half the people on this site are under age 16. The adults would fare better on this geography question.

I do not think that ONLY Americans can get confused about this subject, there are many living here do so also.

Have you been watching Big Brother, its incredible just how thick some people have to be to get on that programme!

So don't go picking on the Americans - most of em are very nice! We got REDNECKS here as well !

"The same reason you seem to stereotype and generalise all Americans :) And, it goes both ways. For instance, where is New York in relation to Chicago?"

New York is roughly in easterly direction to Chicago but also slightly south.

Chicago is in the state of Illnois and is in very close proximity to Lake Michigan.

New York City is in New York state (hence the popular tame New York New York so good they named it twice) and is made up of 5 districs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens and Statten Island.

And about the Missouri River, It begins in Montanna and merges with the Mississippi River In the state of Missouri, just north of St. Louis. The states it flows through are : Montanna, North Dakota, South Dakota, the very edge of Nebraska (forming part of it's border with South Dakota then all of the border with Iowa) Also forms the boundary between Nebraska and Missouri and part of the Kansas - Missouri border. It then flows into Missouri and into the Mississippi River.

Because we don't live over there, we aren't really sure where everything is. We are also unfamiliar with the terminology. I have completed 26 years of formal education including post doctoral work, and I'm not completely sure myself. That sort of thing just is not in our curriculum in school, so we will only know it if we travel a great deal or if we have a great interest in geography.
You over there probably don't have any idea where Missouri is, for example, because you don't live over here, am I correct?

well the Americans i talk to refer Britain as the UK, there might be a majority that do do that. But most of their ancestors come from the foure countries so i assume they would know that they are not in England.

We have a hard time remembering what is England, what is Great Britain, and what is the United Kingdom, but we mean well.

You are really smug. As an example what is the capital of New York ? Which american states were bought with solid gold ? Did the French ever live in America, do they STILL own land in North America, and do they spend Euros ( They do ) Do they have their own telephone system ? (they do )

I just 'enlightened' a sweet American girl about this very topic! She wasn't aware that we didn't like being called English if we weren't from England. So it's possible that they really don't know!
