The only one God tested (and stopped from him from doing it) like that was Abraham.
So, no, God didn't do "that kind of stuff" frequently.
And, if I were told that some angelic dude was going to be coming around to kill the first born unless I had lambs blood on my door--you can be sure there would be a sheep skin on my front porch.

Frequently? That would depend on your definition of frequent. I can only think of two times when God required the sacrifice of a child. And while angels appeared to some individuals in the bible, statistically it was to less than 1% of the population.
If God were to ask me today to kill my firstborn I would just think I was going schizophrenic.

it depends on what you beleive and if you actually beleive that such a thing ever really took place. I condsider my self a christian as I do beleive in Jesus Christ, and I consider myself spirtual as I feel God in my heart contantly, and I've witnessed my own many mircales in my life..... but, and this is a big but with many other christians, I don't take much of the old testament as true literal stories. I don't believe that God would ever run that test on his beloved children, not do I believe he did such a thing. I think and I accept I could be wrong and I know that Jesus knows what is in my heart, but I beleive that many of the stories in the bible (old test) are there for us as guidlines. A sort of "how to" in conducting your life and understanding excatly what God expects of you, and undertsanding how God loves you. They stories are many, they teach how to love a wife, how to care for a child, it teaches it's ok to be angry, and most of all, those stories especially where there was direct communication with God, and God asking folks to sacrfiice children, or take up arms against oppressors, I truly believe that the most inportant part of those stories that everyone always misses is that these people spoke with God. These stories are letting us know that it's OK to speak with God. Notice the dialog of the mortal when speaking with God, they speak with him as if he's an old freind, as if they knew them all their lives.

to repeat what most have already said, God no longer communicates (directly or otherwise) with humans as his word instructs us well enough.
Also, not only was aking Abraham to kill his son a test of faith but Abraham knew of the promise that a nation would come from him.
how would this happen if his son was dead?
so even if he was allowed to kill his son, God would have been able to bring him back to life.
lastly, this was an example of what God would do for us: sacrificing his son Jesus

I only know of one place in the Bible, where He asked Abraham to offer his son as a sacrifice, but it was just a test and the life was spared. If I knew without a doubt that God wanted me to do anything, I would do it.

Key words 'used to'

The people who see angels nowadays are wise to keep it to themselves. God wouldn't want you to kill your firstborn if you believed, that was a plague cast down on his enemies. And if you don't believe, well, he wouldn't appear to you now would he?

If the bible is anything to go by, he is capable to ask one to do that. So, religious people would have to comply. I don't what would they do if after killing their firstborn God changes his mind about their fitness to the kingdom

We know of Abraham from the bible.

If we believe the story of Abraham then we believe the bible.

If we believe the bible then we know that if an angel came to us today and told us something like that it would be a lie.

What is sad and even blasphemous is that there are people who would believe a loving, just God would do this. The Biblical god played games with people, look at the book of Job for example. its sadistic!

so anything that told me to harm another being to prove my faith, doesnt deserve it and shouldnt have it in the first place.

Yes, he has never done that frequently, if he sent a angel that I knew was from him I would do as he asked.
