Well, it depends on what instrument you're talking about. I like D major, especially on the violin, it's very bright and sounds good on the violin. G major's pretty good too, although not quite as cheerful. A minor is cool, so are D minor and E minor. G minor is alright, I don't know, I don't always like it too much. C minor is very dark. Sometimes the flat keys can be nice, if you're going for a soft, gentle sound, although they're a pain to play on the violin. Keys with a bunch of sharps, like A major and E major, are very bright and happy. They can be fun to play. Overall I think D major and A minor would be my favorites.

My favorite key is B Major. I'm a guitarist, so the obvious "big" keys are E and A. But in B, you can get a some nice open "ringing" chords, big fat power chords, and great "strummy stuff".
And even songs I hear on the radio in the key of B Major just sound a little "bolder" to me (I don't have perfect pitch, but I have great relative pitch, and I can hear a few notes in my head really well, so can "simulate" perfect pitch"). And because it's not as overused a key as A, E, or C, it just sounds a little "fresher" to my ears.

A minor. It's the perfect minor scale. Also, when learning about scales for percussionists, it's most often the first minor scale learned, because it's all played with the natural keys.

I'm with you on C minor. Rather fond of G minor too.

For vocal music, it obviously depends on the range of notes involved.
In piano music, I actually like C-flat -- every note is flatted! I'd rather just be ON the black keys instead of hitting the damned things by mistake. :-)

I actually think in the key of C and transpose everything from there. I literally hear the notes in my head, so that makes it interesting when I transcribe music.

Db. It's a very rich and warm key on the piano, and since we are used to C, it really stands out.

I like to sing in G, except for rock'n'roll, which I prefer in A. Folk fiddle is best in D or G.
