With the amount of money required to turn a Mustang into race car, you may as well just buy a new car. If you just want to 'improve' your car's image by making it into a fake race car...there are better things to spend money on. Your car won't drive any better with two exhausts and fog lights.

If you want a Mustang to be an actual race car, you'd need to...

1. Replace the horrible live axle with independent rear suspension and a limited-slip differential.
2. Replace the engine with something that doesn't utterly suck (52.5 HP per liter? Come on! Even the Accord has a higher specific output!).
3. Install adjustable coil-over shocks for all four wheels.
4. Buy a set of racing tires.

That would be enough to make your car respectably quick and nimble. To go further, you could...

5. Tune the intake and exhaust pipes (so pressure waves arrive at the valves at just the right time).
6. Install a supercharger or turbocharger.
7. Increase the bore or compression ratio of your engine.

The first responder has good information for making things respectable, notwithstanding the fact that you did not state that you want a race car.
I also think post number two is great advice.
Start with a good aftermarket cat-back exhaust such as Basani or Flowmaster, Be sure to install an X or H pipe. They help to equalize back pressure.
You may also want to examine the down pipe, to see if you can go a little bigger.
After the exhaust, I would install a high performance air filter such as the K&N or AirHog.
The more air in and out, the more preformance all the way around. (on top of that, you will get better fuel mileage) ( I gained 9 mpg when I switched out my wifes airbox)
Turbo if you want to do some weekend racing, or put a supercharger on it for a little bit more.
Switch to synthetic oils as soon as the break-in period is finished. (25K miles)
Put underdriven pulleys and a fluidamper harmonic dampener
on. This will free up quite a few extra ponies.
Also, for free ponies, move to an electric fan if it is not already there.
A chip is ok, but I would start with the little things first, as they will do more for the money.
As far as locating parts, get a subscription to Fast Fords or some other Mustang rag.

it all depends on u and the type of person u are. i would personaly suggest get another car. i believe a truck is a good first car. because there built tougher and arent as tempting to speed. i would concider myself a responcible person but sometimes the thrill of driving a sports car gets to u. my first car was a 2002 mustang v6 when i was 17. i fixed it up beautifly with rims and some parts under the hood. i was not only driving way to fast with my friends but i was a target for cops. in 1yr i had the car i was pulled over 6times. recieved 4tickets and had my car searched 1time. cops dont like to see teenagers driving those cars and will make ur life harder. i only deserved 1of my tickets wich was speeding, the other 3were just the cops being asses. (not making a complete stop at a stop sign, music to loud and it wasnt even loud at all, and window tints wich were not even dark at all) with that car ur gonna attract allot of attention good and bad but i say the bad outweighs the good in this case specialy cuz tickets are xpensive and insurance shoots up. i was paying 435 a month and now that i drive an F150 im paying 118 so think about it really good

try summitracing.com. i would also check out a cold air intake, throttle body spacer, and underdrive pully kit. last but not least a chip for the computer if available.
