I guess everyone is special... No one is any more special than anyone else, though.

Well in Christian (more than just Catholic) and Islamic tradition, Mary was addressed as most highly favored of God by the angel Gabriel (Jibril).
In Luke, Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptizer, addressed her as most blessed among women.
Jesus may come across as harsh at Cana but I'm not sure if "woman" was being rude. But as He died on the cross (John) He made sure His mother was given to the care of the beloved disciple. Mary was at the cross unlike Jesus' apostles.
Mary was also present with the 11 when Matthias was selected to replace Judas and it appears she was with them at Pentecost.
Reverence for the Holy Mother seems perfectly human. How can you love Jesus and disrespect His Mother...the most blessed of women. Its an ancient custom that goes back to apostolic times. Islam reveres her as the mother of Jesus. This practice predates the Reformation. Even great reformers like Martin Luther had no problem honoring her memory and her role in salvation history.

Do a bible search and you'll see that the term "woman" was a unique term of high honor, that was specifically applied in scripture to only two women in all of human history.
The first was Eve, who failed.
The second was Mary, who remained sinless, and always faithful to God.
That's why Catholics KNOW the Blessed Virgin Mary is so special.
Do you really think that God would have provided anyone less than the very best, to be the mother of his divine son, Jesus?
And do you really think that Jesus would have allowed Satan to have his way ... even for a split second ... with his very own mother?

On the contrary. "Woman" was a term of endearment. Jesus loved his mother, read the bible, he indicates this time and time again, even to his death. He did not do that to belittle Mary. Mary is special, of course, because she was Jesus' mother. Because she conceived of the Holy Spirit, and because she was without sin (original). She was chosen to be Jesus' mother. What an honor, and we hold her in an honorable place in our church. Some people think we worship her, but that is not the case, we just put her in a high place of honor, where she belongs.

A better question would be why do YOU believe that simply because Jesus referred to Mary as 'woman' that he DIDN'T think she was special? Because someone TOLD you that's what it meant? Were you there? Did Jesus tell you personally what he meant? Why do you believe someone who was NOT there and who DOESN'T actually know what he meant? Can you prove that's what he meant? If so, do it. If not, leave us out of your issues.

It is the author's way of expressing what is called "recapitulation"-- which means that God in Christ restores what has been lost due to the primordial fall of humanity from grace. The Mother of Jesus represents the new "woman" who restores what had been lost by the old "woman" Eve. She also can be said in this passage to represent Israel or the Church. Christ's reference indicates to the reader that the identity of his mother is to be understood in relation to his work of redemption, a relationship that is greater and more important than a familial bond. The themes of transformation and re-creation are portrayed throughout the Gospel of John through this kind of dynamic theological symbolism.

You're really out to get catholics aren't you!!! Tone it down man!
First of all, Mary WAS special! The person chosen to bring Jesus into the world?!?! I'd say that's a one in a trillion job! Was she god or something? Obviously not. Does she receive our prayers? Nothing in scripture to make us think she does. Did she have other children? Yes. Did she have to be saved from her sin? Yes.

the Blessed Virgin Mary is to be honored above all other creatures, because she is the mother of the one true living GOD!! She was chosen by God of all the people on earth to carry his HOLY SON! Do you understand how important she is ?! Without her saying yes to God, there is no salvation!
