Because their mouths are often hanging open. This is why I will never buy a used pillow. you can wash the pillow cases, but not the drool covered pillows. This is why pillows often smell funny, because someone has drooled all over it.

cause we don't swallow when we sleep and many people sleep with their mouths open.
