If you've read my other questions, you'll see I'm very caught up in the God/religion/atheist thing. And that I very much understand where atheists are coming from and how they feel. In fact, often I look at the world as atheists do (even though I am Christian) and I look around and see how they can feel a loving God can not possibly exist in this place full of hate. But my question is, do any atheists think that the very existence of LOVE is the strongest possible reason God does exist?? I mean, I know there is hate (plenty of it for sure), but there has to be hate and indifference in order for love to be as powerful as it is. And I personally believe that were there no God, humans might be capable of liking one another and getting along okay, but that love is something totally unique and so undefinable itmust come from something greater than us. Even if you don't agree with me 100%, I just want to know if any athesist/agnostics can see my point at all?? Just wanna discuss. Thanks

Well, you get taught that God is love, so it's understandable that you think of it this way, but to me (I'm an atheist) love doesn't have anything to do with a superior force controlling the world. To me love is just a feeling that we have, like all other feelings and those feelings are produced by chemicals in the brain. People's feelings can be 'killed'. Trauma and mental illnesses can cause people to stop feeling emotions, including love. Does God just disappear from their lives? Turn his back on them when they need him the most?

I don't see anything that points towards the existence of any god. I don't see anything happening that can't be explained without a "God did it" and love can certainly exist without it coming from a god.

Love is a chemical reaction in the brain. Sad, but true.

Beyond that, I am perfectly capable of loving without a god. Why do I need an imaginary friend to tell me to love others? Why can't I just love others because that's what humans do? It's one of the main reasons our species has propagated so much - because we can form close bonds with one another and fight to keep other members of the species alive, because of love.

I really don't understand arguments that spring from the basic notion that "If we can't explain something with utmost certainty, a higher power must be at work." That simply isn't true.

Sorry, I don't agree with you. Believers always point out the good. " Look at the beautiful flowers , look at the beautiful clouds, etc ". If "god" made everything, he also made the ugly - - and there is sure pleanty of that.
If "god" invented love, he also invented hate, and there sure is more that enough of that.
All emotions are strong, none have anything to do with the supernatural.
You admit that it's only a personal belief that love comes from "god". My personal belief is that god is only a superstitious belief. It's very difficult for me to understand how any intelligent person can believe in the supernatural when nothing at all supports such a belief. You;re welcome.

As an atheist... i don't agree with your statement at all... why would the human concept of love have anything to do with god?... if you are one of those people that think that "god is love", then you are living in a fantasy land... all of the three major religious texts (Bible, Torah, Koran) are full of instances of their god destroying whole cities and murdering whole civilizations... (god seems to spend a lot of time killing the infidels to protect his "true believers")... religion does not teach love... it teaches you to think like the rest of the "group" or risk death and/or eternal torments of hell... doesn't sound like LOVE to me.

I pose this question to you... if god is supposed to have predated the earth and is supposed be the creator of everything, then wouldn't he logically need to have an understanding of everything that he created (from the atom to a fully realized human being... to planets and stars and galaxies and everything in between)?... and additionally he is supposed able to hear and individually distinguish millions of prayers at once... and hopefully answer them all (when he gets around to it)... if so, then wouldn't god be the "most advanced life force in the universe"?... well then, where did the most advanced life force in the universe come from?... why was it created?... and why would it waste it's time worrying about us?... atheists are waiting for the answers to these questions.

I don't see the logic of your question. If this is hypothetical, then yes, love would be an attribute of a loving god. So...then what? Is love the strongest possible reason for god to EXIST? Hell no. Love doesn't have to equate to a god. Neither does goodness have to equate to a god. All good things and bad things are intrinsic to mankind. Each person chooses to cultivate either goodness or badness according to their personality and mental makeup. I'm afraid that I don't agree with you, but your question was interesting and thoughtful.

That sounds like quite a stretch, bob. We could say there is a ton of hate and that proves god. Read up on some OT.

I think love comes from the selfish gene though. Loving and protecting your own is what keeps the species going.

I love you, have a nice day.

No sorry I dont see your point. First of all Love cant really be defined because love is defined by the individual in retrospect. For example, I can buy a gift I think someone would love, but this occurs in retrospect being that I putting my perception of love on someone else. And whats the possibility that my gift will make someone love me? well that all depends on the perception of the receiver of the gift.

God is merciful towards all including atheists; Saints cannot be atheists; Saints are sent by God to the world; Some sages, however, may be impersonalists but not atheists; A Saint is greater than a sage; By sadhana, one may become a sage (Rishi) but not a Saint; A Saint is sent by God only;

Nope. Love is just an emotion. Like anger, frustration, etc. All governed by the body through hormones, various chemicals, and electrical impulses. Just give it some time before science will have a complete understanding.

No. Because love is just chemicals. It has nothing to do with any god. Emotions are not proof of a god.

There IS something greater than us. Nature. That doesn't mean its a god.
