The one on my back felt like they were burning and ripping my skin off at the same time. The one on my foot felt like ant bites. Some tattoo places offer numbing cream or shots before the tattoo, but that cost extra.
Just remember it's a large open wound. Keep it clean and moisturized. Use dye and fragrance free soaps and lotions on it. Avoid rubbing it too, soaking it in water (tub, pool, ocean/river), and direct sunlight while it's healing. You don't want to damage your skin anymore during this time.
Make sure you go to a clean, licensed place. Look up your state regulations and ask question at the shop if you think something is out of sorts.
If you think it's getting infected, go to the doctor right away so you can deal with it before it's too late (you can mess up your tattoo and all the area around it!)
Yay for tattoos!

where you get them tells you how much pain to expect. On the outside of the arm, not bad at all, like a bad sunburn. In the inside of the arm, VERY painfull. Anyplace where you don't have much flesh over the bone (like hands, feet, ankles etc) really hurts.
Infection is always a concern and you need to follow the directions givine you by the artist. Also, pick your artist with care, cuz once it's on, it's on for life. Also, protect it when it scabs over, don't let the scab get pulled off as this can blur the ink if it hasn't healed all the way.

Its worse than getting your finger pricked but not as bad as a bee sting. Bee stings are way more painful, I think. The weird thing about my tattoo was after about 5 or 10 minutes it actually felt numb and relaxing...but I think its because the guy really massaged and rubbed it alot while he was working on it.
It took about 1 & 1/2 hours to finish mine.

first, it depends on what body part you put it on. nipples, ribs, armpits, and feet are probably the worst.
second, how sensitive is your skin? mine is very sensitive, so tattoos are agony. (but i can't stop)
to help with healing eat well, get good sleep and take a multi-vitamin. the one on my ribs healed completely in a week.
