I have a history of high blood pressure, but have been on an weight loss and nutrition plan to reduce my weight and improve my health. So, it has really gotten under control in the last 4 months.
This morning, my trainer had me jumprope for 4 minutes (2 minute intervals with a 5 min weight lifting routine in between jumping sessions). Now, my head is hurting slightly, I notice my feet are slightly swollen and my left knee is really stiff. Is this common when you start jumping rope (I am 5'5" and am about 45 pounds overweight at this point)?

Though your hbp is under control, the fact is the conditions still exist...especially if you are over weight,So the head aches you are getting are due to a rise in your blood pressure.I experience this too,it is commonKeep in mind your blood pressure rises normally when you are doing cardio..Your feet and knees however are a different problem. It can be water retention due to the impact or you are already over hydrated when you jump rope.Or it can simply be your body weight is still to much to have your joints impacted by the shock of jumping. It always aggrevates me when I see a trainer have a person who is 20 lbs or more overweight due these high impact/joint stressing exercises

Well, jump rope is excercise, really good exercise.
And exercise is great for people with high blood pressure.
The headache and discomfort is most probably because you're not used to that level of strain yet.
And jump roping does require that you jump up and down, fast, which would make you dizzy and if you have a weak knee or ankles, might cause that stiffness and swelling.
But, like I said before. It's exercise, it's good for you.

Jumping rope should help you lower you BP.
Did you drink coffee this morning? There is a new study that shows drinking "UNFILTERED" coffee (espresso's, latte's, cappicino's are make unfiltered) will cause the BP to rise. It should also be noted that drinking filtered coffee (your normal cup of joe) will lower BP. Green tea also lowers it ... and takes away coffee jitters.

I don't know if your symptoms are from jumping rope. As far at the lead question, jumping rope raises your heart rate, when you are jumping and for the next few minutes. Your heart rate may affect your b.p. If you are continuing to have problems, you should call your doc.

I think jumping or exercise for that fact should lower your BP.
Initially you might not be use to it. The high blood could be at the artery flow in circuit or the return circuit the veins. Both will be strenuous to the heart. At time we should think of good blood circulation. Massage , good exercise , good rest and heathty diet. Be Joyful and happy to helps.

if your doing it right- the impacts should be minimal. Your jumps should be just high enough to let the rope skip under you. Your legs should absorb the impacts.

Any kind of exercise can make your blood pressure go up. It should return to normal after resting.
