I seem to remember watching a British show with a similar premise and similar characters - especially the red-head mechanic girl. Am I making this up in my head, or was there a show like that?

Firefly was an American show based on nothing but the imagination of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's creator Joss Whedon. There was no British connection. As for Red Dwarf, there was no female character until several seasons into the show's run

No similarity between Firefly and Red Dwarf. Firefly is a more serious series, Red Dwarf is total slapstick comedy, probably one of the best comedies, but I've seen both and I see nothing in common.
