Avoid all Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodges. I don't know if it's the car or the dealer network, but whenever I hear about a lemon, it's always a Chrysler product.

Honda makes the most reliable car in the world. Acura is Honda's upscale car line.

But . . .

Don't end up with a car you don't like. Buy a car from your passion, not out of reason.

Because, in the long run it will save you money.

You see, if you drive a car you bought out of practicality, you won't love the car. And when you're told your car that's worth $1,900 needs a $2,000 engine rebuild, your practicality and reason will dictate that it's time to buy a new car. So you'll solve your $2,000 problem with a $20,000 solution.

If you buy a car you love, like a '65 Mustang, or a '67 Camaro, or a 67 Volkswagen, there is no amount short of a total loss wreck that you won't pay to keep the car on the road.

Besides, loved cars are cared for better. My car never has dirty oil. It gets anything it needs when it needs it. We've had it 21 years, and the original owner had it 20 years. It's a '66 Chevy Nova.

You should know about keeping gas in the car. I don't mean in the back seat or the trunk, but in the gas tank. Also, check the tire pressure at least weekly or anytime they don't look like they are fully pressurized.

If you car has gauges, scan them often while driving. You will learn what is a normal reading for each gauge, and if it starts changing you can spot a problem before it becomes a major one.

The simpliest cars are normally the most reliable. There is just less to go wrong. the simplier it is, then the cheaper it is to repair normally. Good luck drive safe.

You can't go wrong with a Honda or Toyota for reliability. They also are the best cars at retaining their value.

The best advice I can give you regarding cars is to respect them for the powerful, dangerous machine that they are. Learn how to do basic car care like washing and waxing and learn to keep the fluid levels and tire pressure correct. Make sure the tires, brakes and hoses are not worn by checking them often.

In American culture cars are a status symbol and an extension of "who we are" but it is important to keep that into perspective. Be a smart consumer and spend your money wisely when it comes time to make your first vehicle purchase. Never buy on emotion alone. Buy a car based on income and need, not on color, HP ratings or the coolness factor. I'm not advocating that you drive your grandma's Buick but a conservative used car is a very wise choice for a young driver.
