As your question is very general, you will receive a general answer: maybe.
It really depends on the specific type of key strings in question. If it's a simple one where you give one string to them and you get another one back, then it's clear there's an algorithm involved, and the program has internal logic that validates the relation, and then it's just a matter of reverse engineering that code to come up with the keygen.
On the other hand, if you have a Microsoft-type Key where you need to register the key online, then they can ban the key from getting any further updates if they determined it has been compromised. And since they generated the keys there could be "no pattern" to it at all, thus a keygen would not work at all.
It all depends on the specific implementation.

Yes, they do but they can also be programs, virus's, spyware etc in disguise. So beware!
Basically a keygen is a crack of the code that a program uses to make sure you are authorized to use it. Basically it is a code breaker program. Very simple program.

a lot of keygens work, a lot don't. Keep in mind that keygens can even carry a virus or spyware so be sure you have protection on your pooter.

Yes and no. You may need to gen a key a couple of times to get one that will work. Unfortunately, that may get it installed on your PC but the vendor web site may reject it. I have had this problem with Diablo 2 Key generator. I can install it and play the game, but cannot access Internet services for it like playing it on-line. So be careful what programs you use a key gen for.

Of course! The ones that don't:
1. Generally are laced with malware that hides itself on your computer and "taps" your internet or "watches" where you surf...
2. Are written by wannabe hacks.
I recommend you determine the algorithm through luck, intuition and brute force and writing your own keygen.
Good luck...

mostly all of them are have viruses in them and you can't really scan them for viruses either because all keygens turn up as viruses anyway

Yeah most of them works great but some can't work if the software is programed very smartly..
