...or is it the body's defense mechanism that kicks in as the brain is dying and isn't getting enough oxygen. I know I see a bright light when I hold my breath for a really long time or hit my head against the bottom of the pool...Is that God...or my brain?

brain.
if you came back you obviously weren't dead. You are officially dead when you are brain dead, not before. In any near-death experience your brain still works on some level.
I think some argue it's accessing the experience of getting born, others show you can get the same experience using certain psychodelic drugs.

It's a physiological response due to trauma to the brain and in some cases lack of oxygen....... and it's not when they die though. it's when they're near death. The whole whilte light... tunnel vision thing.... if people died there wouldn't be anyone to share that experience so it's only when they are near death.

In any case, it's a physical response much like when a person goes into shock when they are traumatically injured.

It is all the little neurons in your brain dying, because it is being deprived of oxygen.

And apparently, you may also create a vision, of what it is you expect to see, because you subconsciously know that you are dying as well.

Good news everyone!

The last time my heart stopped, I saw the bright light everyone must be talking about. As I lay there, the surgeons then turned off the operating light and told me I would be just fine.
