In the past month or so, our 12 year old long haried mini dauchsie has began eating mud and chunks of grass. Is she missing a vitiamin?

Dogs usually eat these things when they have upset stomachs. She may be having some digestive issues with her food, or maybe just age. They usually do it when they are trying to make themselves throw up. Has she been coming inside with a really gross sour smell sometimes on her snout? If so, this is what she is doing.

You dog is trying to tell you he is needing vit. and Minerals in his diet. Try a good vitamin and mineral supplement. He also may need a little help going to the bathroom if he is eating grass too. If you have not had him checked out lately, try taking him to the vet for a check-up. Make sure they do blood work to see what his body is missing.

Its very hot and your dog is older - make sure there is always plenty of fresh clean water available! Some dogs are just looking for moisture by eating grass and mud. My dogs eat grass cos they like it and for no other reason :-)

Dogs and cats have been known to eat grass when they have an upset stomach. They'll usually end up barfing the grass and whatever is messing up their gut.
A vet visit may be in order.

My dog does that too. She may have an upset stomach or she may be lacking nutrition and she eaats and she thinks that this will help. Has she been throwing up?? My dog who is 12 years old also eats and we took him to the vet and they said we should feed him more. But she may just have an upset stomach!

Cats and dogs eat grass because it cleans out their digestive system - like fibre. Some plants also cause the animals to regurgitate, which helps to clean out their stomach.

sometimes dogs eat grass when they feel sick. Maybe you dogs stumach is upset. my old lab used to do that. eating the grass never did anything bad to him though so i wouldn't worry too much about it.

dogs eat grass when they are sick ... and since your dog is 12 yrs old (most...dogs like 12-15yrs) you might want to bring your dog to a vet..

She might be. Or maybe something's upsetting her tummy so she's trying to make it come out.
