Small 3.5 kVA gen output o.k. except when try to charge ups batteries. 230 mains supply for computers supplied by batteries via inverter, batteries trickle charged by mains and take over on power supply interruption. Could the gen output wave be wrong? Or what else? Thanks in advance for any helpful input!

The voltage might be to low check mains voltage with a meter and then check genny to see if it is high enough. If its a cheap imported genny then it might be low. If you havn't got a frequency meter to check the revs. plug in an electrick clock with second hand into the genny and check the time with a digital watch if its running slow the revs are to slow. Adjust the revs untill the clock runs a little fast because the genny will slow down as soon as you put a load on it. An electric clock relys on frequency to keep right time. Have a look at the current draw from the batteries (ammeter in series). If the battery pack is huge and flat, you may be drawing more than 15 amps. Have you tried connecting the batts AFTER Genny is up and running? Maybe Genny doesn't like starting on a load. If the inverter is not sine wave, it may take a huge inrush current. I have a 300 watt inverter that regularly blows a 10 amp fuse on startup!

Can you be a bit more specific, am having trouble trying to understand your set up.
If your generator is supplying 230v to a mains operated battery charger, and your batteries supply an inverter, you shouldn't have any problems so long as your output waveform from the inverter is sinusoisal or simulated sine wave.
Write back detailling your set up and i will try to help.

You need to give more info about the symptoms.

Does the generator struggle or does the UPS just not run?
