In the "old" days using medium format, it would be unusual to get 100 proofs. Then came 35mm, and the count went up to 200 or 250 maybe. Now it's digital, and brides expect literally hundreds of images. I shoot about 500 or 600 digital images for a six to eight hour day and about 3 or 4 rolls of film. I usually deliver about 400-500, sometimes more digital proofs and a CD (or more than one due to file size) and almost all the film prints. Add maybe 200 more if I cover the rehersal dinner.
It really depends on the wedding and reception. To be honest, some are more photogenic than others. More people require more shots to cover. Some brides want a lot of formals (here in the South, that is the norm) and others want mostly pj coverage. (Hint, even if the bride SAYS she doesn't want any posed shots, she usually really does, and if she doesn't, the sets of parents do, so try to suggest a least a quick session to CYA.)
I have found in the reception, after the dinner, cake cutting, garter and bouquet toss, and first couple of dances, that the event has probably been covered and the pictures just start repeating themselves. Ask the bride before you leave if there is some shot you haven't thought of that she wants, or some special person you need to get a shot of.

Here is what I remember. The lady had a lot of film with her, and took pictures like crazy throughout the night. Of those, I don't know how many were "keepers." I would just plan for the worse case scenario, and take A LOT of film with you, and just point and click throughout the night without worrying how much film you have left...and then worry about which ones are keepers later on.

You can never take too many pictures at a wedding! Most couples only do it once and they want plenty of memories on paper. I would recomend 200-300. I had about 250 made at mine.
