Michigan Avenue is the best area to stay. Make sure you are north of the river or right near the river. There are dozens of excellent hotels to choose from there, however, they will all be in the $250 to $350 range per night. Of these, my favorites are the W Lakeshore and the Omni.
If you don't want to spend that much, you may want to consider staying in the suburbs or looking at the Days Inn in on the North Side near Wrigleyville.

I suggest staying at the Hyatt Regency on the Riverfront. It is by Michigan Avenue and the Magnificent Mile is just 1 block away. The hotel staff was really helpful and helped out a lot. A walk out to Navy Pier isn't that far either. If you go to Navy Pier try taking a lunch or dinner tour on the Spirit of Chicago. If you choose to take the subway (Red Line) to Wrigley Field there is stations 3-4 blocks away on State Street.
Hope it helps.

The suggestion of using Priceline is a good one. Try to stay at a hotel on Michigan Ave, north, not south or any place close to the near North side where there is lots of entertainment, restaurants, etc. Michigan Ave, the Magnificent Mile. is a treat in itself for all things including world class shopping. The Hancock building is an interesting building to visit also.

I don't know one specifically, because I've never been to Chicago. But I do have an indirect recommendation: check out Historic Hotels of America. I spotted this in the History Channel magazine, and it sounds superb. They are probably on the expensive side, but perhaps a smallish room, rather than a suite, would not be too bad. These are all hotels which are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, or otherwise have historic significance.

I like using priceline.com. I normally stay in the close to the airport because I feel that the hotels have some of the best service for the money. The big hotels downtown have good views and lots of good service, but a big pricetag. I also like staying in the O'Hare area because it puts you in a central location to the suburbs and the city itself. I usually bid on a hotel and end up with a good one for around $50-75 per night, but it is a gamble as you never know what you are going to get. However, I have never been disappointed on any of the 2 1/2 stars and up in the O'Hare area. The Doubletree and the Marriot are probably my favorites.

i also did a surprise trip for hubby to Chicago and used priceline- I made a bid and it gave us: Sutton Place Hotel- it was LOVELY! (I think we got it for 100 a night as opposed to 200 or more)
and then I made reservations right across the street at Tavern on Rush (FAB! steakhouse) (I used OpenTable.com to make the reservations- but you can contact them directly too). Then in the morning, we went to Original Pancake house (also right across the street)- but there are SO many restaurants around there. (Hugo's Frog Bar, Carmine's, Gibson's...)
By the ballpark there are tons of restaurants too- on Clark running south from Wrigley Field there are about 3 blocks straight of restaurants- if you want a good burger, check out Goose Island Brewery- there is also Heaven on 7 (southern) and many Japanese... our faves in that area are Angelina Ristorante/Italian (Broadway and Addison) or Cafe 28/Cuban (Irving Park and Ravenswood under BrownLine Station)

in regards to getting to the cubs game... I would take the Red Line (chicago "L") to the game. If you take a cab from Michigan avenue it will take forever b/c of game-day congestion and probably cost at least $20 each way. Here is a map of the cta - you take the red line from michigan avenue (there are few stations by michigan ave to get on the train) north to the addison stop.

There are some great ideas in the answers for hotels. The Raphael is also very nice.
You could take him to Harry Caray's or the billy goat tavern .. see the web sites for info, both very steeped in Cub history!
Have fun!

The Swiss Hotel on Wacker is great. You can get a good deal if you poke around, typically it is considered a nicer hotel but I know of people who have found good deals (less than $200 a night). Great views!
