just make it sound like a joke and see what he says back if he goes 'what' then tell him your joking and talk about something else but if he say the same back then get in there.

I think that you can say things to him and ask him questions that lead up to him asking you about your liking or interest in him.

overuse of the words "no guy ever did that for me" or something similar when he is telling you something, I don't know what it is but it works.
