Not all police do that but usually when they do its because they are fed up of broken doorbells

If they are at a house, there is usually a reason. They are also overly-protective, because sometimes the most innocent house stop can turn out to be deadly for a police officer. So they tend to be direct and forceful. Looking around for a doorbell, especially when so many don't even work, is a waste of time when you're hunting down crime. Plus, you can knock on the door and step to the side, in case someone shoots through the door. Hit the doorbell, and the person inside knows exactly where you are standing. It is really a matter of safety.

Depends on why they are there. If you are a complainant, I will ring the door bell.... you don't answer and off I go. No complainant, no crime.
If you are a suspect, I will hit the door bell a few times and then pound on the door until you answer.
Also, few of the homes in the area of the city where you have to pound on the door its because there is no doorbell.

I always ring the bell and then bang the door if there's no response.
Why do members of the public always ask so many pointless questions? Haven't they got anything better to do? (To coin a phrase)

Because they're NOT the polite workmen. Some doorbells don't even work so they bang on the door because most people can hear that. Oh yeah, and it scares the crap out of you. Cops aren't out to be polite.

When we had cause to ask for police help they rang the bell. When a neighbour called them out because they saw a figure in our garden they again rang the bell.

Oh well I am the expert on this! I met a cop, who had split ( a few months previous) with a female cop. Well one day in my house, she came and did that on MY door! For personal reasons too. I answered and said "dont you dare knock on my door like they taught you in police school"
I am still with him LOL. I still hate her though.
Edit. and I agree with Mick the Fish LOL!

2-to scare the life out of you
3-they are going to arrest you
4-you have been very naughty
5-handcuffs then you are charged and banged up for the weekend.
